Lauterbach's
Subject: Lauterbach's
I was prompted to start this thread by a reference in the "Is it Park Slope" thread. Any long-time residents here who used to hang out weekends at the excellent music scene at Lauterbach's (now called The No Name Bar, or something like that) on Prospect Avenue back in the '80's/early 90's? Care to share memories of that idiosyncratic little precursor to the fabricated "hipness" of the modern-day slope?Comments

We almost bought the building... bout 5 years ago.. the bar was closed but the property still owned by one (or mosre) of the sons. They were asking $250 but after the architect checked it we decided no... what a mess.. everything illegal in every way. I haven't been down that way. I wonder if that same person still owns it or has it been sold.

Did you ascertain whether it could be continued to be operated as a bar / music venue (zoning-wise, putting any issues of DOB violations aside)?

I hung out there! I was way underage, though. I was trying to remember where it was, I remember having to pass "Gran Prospeh Hall: Glamour & Romance" to get there.
-
i remember it well-I used to go there all the time. My husband was in a band many years ago that played there-LOL!

I don't remember all details. The Bar had commercial usage clearance... The apts (I think there were 4) were all illegal. there is a back staircase (hidden) that was used in prohibition, 3 garages.... and about 10 outside parking spaces (ding, ding.. how much for each space?) Nothing inside was up to code.. electrical, plimbing. this was a deal to pass up... no regrets. -
I am curious, where is this (or was) place? I have heard about it from people who have lived in this area for a long time, but never knew exactly where used to be located. I am guessing the building still exists?

It 's between 6th&7th , on Prospect Ave, you would have to walk down a set of stairs to enter it.
It was a dive bar before dive bars were invented. -

That is because "Dive" bars go back to prohibition and this space was a bar in prohibition. The building has an extension on the lower level and is quite deep.. The lot the place sits on is unusual shape. The building is entered frontwise on prospect but the land goes through to the 6th ave side (it is not a corner house) and outlets on the avenue as well.

If the building wasn't so ugly, I'd say that it would make a great historical landmark. For some reason, I never knew about the place when I lived in the area before. One of the first things we noticed when we moved to the block was the Pub sign. As far as I know, the place is still empty.

From ACRIS, it looks like it was bought by a Brooklyn mortgage broker called Ben Werczberger in 2005 for $500,000. Amazingly enough, despite Veets' description of the condition of the place, the DOB site doesn't list a single violation for the property.

When was the property transferred?
Trust me...what happened was the previous owner cleared off the violations.. like taking out kitchens, re-do on wiring...Or it was sold for cash so no Bank came in for inspection before loaning money.
I haven't been on the block recently but I would bet that the "lot" can be developed..... the building is not landmarked. -
yes my band used to play there back in the early 90's, though the scene around the brooklyn beat bands had largely finished. any bar that serves beer in a size called "the container" is awesome in my book.
-
hey i bought a record at the WFMU record fair a couple years ago, it's a compilation of bands that used to play there! i'll have to review it, the names of the bands escape me now. but the record is awesome, it has the whole story of the bar and scene at the time (mid 80s i think). i'll try to dig it up.
and 'dives' date back further than prohibition, back to the Gangs of New York and before, when nearly every horrible tenement had incredibly unsanitary alcohol establishments in the walk-down. pretty much any bar called a 'dive' these days is described so in jest.
except jackie's 5th amendment.
oh, found this article about it:

it's near the bottom, the album was called "Today Brooklyn; Tomorrow the World," and was released in 1989. -
Oh wow! i remember those bands!
Frank's Museum, Squirrels From Hell, Formaldehyde Blues Train
Wow, like I said, used to go to Lauterbach's a lot! LOL. man, I am old. -
Biohazard.

And I'll never forget the look on peoples faces when they saw her preparing the fries, slicing up REAL potatoes, no less!their dog ginger bit a musician in the nuts
And ran off one night by climbing into a band's van.the pool table was always level
And every time went there I made a point of surveying and chuckling over the new items added to the weird shit they had for sale in the display case opposite the bar.
Remember the elaborate chalk design on the black ceiling? Alice told me that some guy who used to come to the bar all the time to indulge his alcoholism eventually kicked the habit and came back to the joint and did the ceiling in thanks for Alice's encouragement in his sobriety.
Does anyone know if Alice is still around in the neighborhood? -
frank's museum has been playing around the area lately. they were at freddy's a couple weeks back. and formaldehyde periodically reunites. i saw them at southpaw last april.

Suprised there's actually someone else on this board who knows about those guys, for a band from Brooklyn they were pretty famous for a minute there.
How about 25 ta Life, Madball, Merauder, SOB from the LES (who's dead now)??
Ran into Evan from Biohazard in the York St. Station years ago, after he'd already gotten famous w/ Oz, Tera Patrick and whatnot, he still made a point to come over and say what's up.. always a nice guy.

Has anyone else noticed that the Pub sign is no more? It's now a hideous yellow and black sign that says honeydew drop or something silly. What's up with that?
-
Subject: Lauterbach's
Uh oh - I hope you are sitting down. I think Honey Dew drop is a daycare on 14th St. They must be branching out. I almost want to enroll my kid - a daycare in a former bar. Hmm. Interesting in a pink-plastic-is-taking-over kinda way. -
This it?

Oh lord. Daycare? How can they possibly have gotten permission for that? Or perhaps they are running vocational training for the service industry. Start 'em young!
-
Aha. I saw the sign over the parking lot an vaguely wondered what it was.
So, this is the same day care center where the little girl had a seizure. -
Did I mention that there is another daycare center right next door that's been there for a while?
