Has anyone gone to BodyTonic Pilates? Any thoughts on the place?

  • I went once, to a group class at the Flatbush location, maybe about 8 months ago. In my opinion the instructor was not great - she had a low energy level and seemed to be new/inexperienced. I also found the instruction room to be cramped. The vibe at the place was weird - I remember feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome.

I tried to make a reservation to attend a second class and it resulted in a run-in with the receptionist, who at one point hung up on me, even though in my opinion I was speaking civilly to her. The event culminated with me actually writing a letter to the owner (something I never do). She personally wrote me back, but didn't exactly apologize, although she did take the tone of being upset by the story I relayed to her. The incident soured me on the place and I never went back. It's too bad, as I live so close and was super excited when the place opened up.

I'd be interested to hear others' experiences, as when I went it was fairly soon after they opened. Perhaps the receptionists and instructors have improved, and/or others have had positive experiences.
  • I used to go there back when they were on Fifth and Douglass. I did some private sessions with the owner, Jennifer deLuca, and she was very professional. Some of the other staff are great but some staff I've encountered there have been slightly odd though, at best.
  • I've been going there for a year or so, for private lessons and also classes. Occasionally the receptionists can be a little spaced-out, but overall I've found the instructors to be excellent. Jennifer is a super teacher; her classes are great, and she seems to have very high standards when it comes to her instructors.
  • I am a former Body Tonic client. I agree that the vibe of the place is extremely weird. It is quite off-putting. I never had a problem with a receptionist but not all of its professional staff (including a member of the teaching staff) have their acts together. All in all, an uncomfortable place and, compared to other places I've visited, poor quality, especially for the relatively high fees. Makes me want to buy my own reformer!
