getfreshnyc on 5th avenue!!!
hey...have you all been yet?
stopped by that new place getfreshnyc on 5th and like 6th street or so today.
great space and nice looking food. it's prepared meals...you can stock up for a week...and then you cook them at home. looks like some great stuff.
the interior is pretty cool too....turquoise walls, high ceilings, cool lights, tin ceiling. just an overall good vibe.
bought a beet salad and some chicken breasts that look delicious...
check it out.

how much were the chicken breasts?
-
chicken is 6.95 and most of the salads i saw were 7.95...
i think i also saw pork chops or loins and a huge selection of soups...
might be a bit expensive to do all the time, but i definitely look forward to the option when i don't feel like cooking. it's all seasoned, marinated and ready to go in 30 mins.
the packaging is nice too. i'm a sucker for that kinda stuff. -
www.getfreshnyc.com
just read more about the packaging...you can take it back to the store to recycle or give it to the delivery guy to take back. kinda cool. always thought the waste associated with fresh direct was excessive.
i'm impressed with this place. -
this smells faintly of spam....
-
i assure you i have no connection with this establishment.
i simply like to support and get the word out on new places i discover and enjoy in my neighborhood.
sad that you would consider such a thing "spam" but i guess being jaded is more common than not in this city. -

Don't feel offended. If you hang on this forum for a while you see that people use it to shill, spam, promote...and posters are sensitive..don't take offense.

Some people just get excited when they find something good in the neighborhood.
I have been waiting for this place to open and hoping they are good since they are near me. I hope they don't take too much business away from Pollio where I also like to buy pre-cooked food. But, at Pollio, the food is already cooked-you are saying at Get Fresh-you still have to cook everything-right? -
Longtime Sloper... If you indeed are you know how long Pollio has been in business. At this point it is a "different" business than it was at the other location and that disaster of opening up a store on 7th ave as well. There was a time when I knew every person who owned and worked there by name. My daughter has said that she wouldn't have gotten through medical school without being able to stop there every morning for breakfast and to bring some decent food to the hospital to eat on long shifts as a resident. Though the store is less homey and neighborly now they seem to be doing ok so I don't think the opening of another business will effect them. i haven't been in there yet but I think the concept is u bring stuff home and cook it and not just reheat it.
-
I have lived here for 20 years now, in the same apartment. Back when I used to take my dog for a walk at JJ Byrne park and find crack viles and condoms there.
And, yes, I have been going to Pollio since way back when they were at the other location and all the cousins/brothers worked there. I also know that they aren't doing the business at the new location that they hoped for-this came from the owner's father (everybody sold out and moved away-the store is now owned by one man as opposed to the partnership it was). I still shop there a lot and they even recognize my voice on the phone by now-LOL. So, a lot of times when i am in there, we all chat. And, yes, I remember the store on 7th Avenue.
Anyway-maybe I will check out Get Fresh tonight. -
yes...veets you are right....this food you take home and cook yourself.
you know when you walk into a place and just have a good vibe?
this was one of those places for me. people seemed excited to be there...and the person working at the counter was super friendly and already seemed to know a few of the shoppers... -
Ok belz-you sold me-I am going tonight.
-
I have to say I'm so disappointed in the new Pollio... it seems dreary, unfriendly, unwelcoming. And mostly empty. Totally unlike the old, beloved Pollio, which always seemed like controlled chaos, but I always got served fast and it was such a friendly, happy, family place full of shouting and bantering. A real Brooklyn joint. One of those old-school family places, like Leopoldi, that are slowly disappearing.
I suspect it's the new "vibe" that's keeping the customers away. It just seems... cold. :^( -
The food is still good!

So totally agree with what you said. The last time I was in there, which has got to be about 8 months ago I ordered a little of this and that... enough for a lite lunch for 2 people and the bill was about $20 kid you not). The guy behind the counter, who I had never met before said to me.."Gee, that is expensive" as we both looked down on afew plastic containers. I was done! If I am enough of an idiot to pay that much for lunch I certainly don't want the guy selling me the stuff to say it out loud.

Best to remember Poliio with all the fondness my family always held for that place. -

I just want to point out (more to the person who said this "smells like spam" than veets) that belzjm has been around the site a while and has posted over 200 times. Shillers/spammers usually are guest posters or new signups. It's pretty rare for someone who's already been participating here for a while to participate in any of that stuff. -
yes, and i should probably say also that there was a conversation a while back on another thread about the old shoe store on 7th avenue/lincoln and about what it might become after it vacated.
i believe i made a suggestion and said i had an idea for a kind of lunch shop with already prepared lunches in cool packaging.
just so you know...this is a total coincidence!! i promise you i haven't opened my own store in the last few months. (that would be pretty impressive though).
i guess that's why i like this place so much...it's kinda like the store i envisioned. this place has food pre-cooked...mine was more about already made and assembled locally grown/raised lunches in boxes, but close enough. and now i don't need to open it up myself...i can just EAT the food!!! -
"but i definitely look forward to the option when i don't feel like cooking."
You still have to cook it, it's just put together for you. Some are heat and serve, some like the chicken pot pie you have to cook for 1 1/4 hours. I don't see the appeal. I can just as easily go to Key Food on 5th and get pumpkin ravioli and swiss chard. If I don't feel like cooking I'll order out. -

Agreed. If it was a first or even tenth post, I'd smell spam too. But 200 is a regular and someone prolly just excited about a new place.
But, it's good to be a at least a bit jaded and suspect of things to a degree. In this day and age (and probably for all time) people try to pass stuff off when it's just not true.
Anyway, I'm interested in getfreshnyc. How's their vegetarian selection?
(Mod note: Fixed your quote tags.) -
Get Fresh has a great write-up in the food section of the NYT today . . .
-
yeah...i guess when i said didn't feel like cooking i meant preparing. that's the part i dislike.
i love the cooking part so this is ideal for me.
had the chicken breast last night! was quite tasty. -
This place sounds great - think I'm going to try them out this week. Thanks for the tip, belzjm!
-
Has anyone else tried this place? I went in there Tuesday night and was not impressed.
What a huge space with nothing much in it! Anyone else check them out? Am I missing something? -
I ran in cos I was in a food pickle, and their cupboards were quite bare - which could be viewed as a positive sign. The prices were pretty steep; if I didn't have time to prepare a meaty entree and i wanted to spend 17-plus dollars, I'd just nip down to blue ribbon, or somewhere cheaper. I ended up spending $19 on a soup and a small mac cheese (I believe the lge one was $14.50). Oh, and a fizzy drink.
It was yummy tho. -
Been there twice now. The food was VERY good both times. Their prices are about twice that of take-out but that's not a fair comparison. The food quality compares to a nice restaurant. I'd be interested to hear from somebody who buys FreshDirect prepared foods for a price/quality comparison. BTW the large storefront gives getFresh a lovely elegant feel IMO.

I found the prices very high ($14.00 for a large container of macaroni and cheese??) and very little selection.

I went out of my way to check this place out and was disappointed. Perhaps they will have More to offer but the renovation of the space opened it up and there just is not a lot of stock. Signs indicate that they are selling"gifts" .. blah, blah... but there were so few choices on that as well.
I couldn't find a thing in there I was interested in buying to gift or buying to consume and on this particular afternoon it was not about spending money. I was willing and able to spend the money.
I had just stopped in to Zuzus Petals up the block and gave them $8.50 for a bar of soap.... but not the average bar of soap.. the one I tried a year ago (French hard milled lovely soap)and now use no other soap in the house. My point.. I am the kind of consumer that if I am attracted enough to some thing to try it once and it is great.. I will buy it again and the cost is not the issue. I found THIS store cold, unattractive and I just couldn't justify buying anything in there..
(Thoughts to myself... Oye Vey.. That was a harsh review... and not one morsel passed my lips that I can tell you about.) -
Veets, you have to try the food !
-
bluecat wrote: Veets, you have to try the food !
I am assuming you did and I understand what you said there.. I will try it... YesterdayI was in such a happy mood and wanted to buy something there but as I tried to explain in my response... I just couldn't get beyond the physical space and the "coldness" of the display areas..
I trust one afternoon I wil be lazy, desperate for dinner ...go in there with some money, bring something home, enjoy it and be posting here... changing my tune!!!1
