Trap-Neuter-Return Project Planned for Bergen Street Cats
Next week, a large TNR project involving the feral cats in the lots on Bergen between Vanderbilt and Underhill will begin. I've been given two slots on the ASPCA mobile spay/neuter van on December 15th and five on the 16th. The Slope Street Cat ladies and myself will begin trapping on the evening of the 12th and will be out there every evening until the 15th (or until we have trapped seven cats that can be spayed and neutered).
Having seen how brave these cats are, I don't think it's going to be hard to trap these guys. What will be hard is keeping track of who's been fixed and who needs to be spayed/neutered in the future. With that said, I'll be launching a blog in the next few days (will post link), which will have updates on our trapping status as well as photos of the cats we've gotten. If you see a cat in the lot that isn't one of the one's we've photographed, you can email me via the blog and give me a description of the cat and the location. This will make things easier the next time we TNR in these lots.
Also, in terms of feeding. I'm going to ask that people who have been kind enough to leave food out for the cats refrain from doing so from the 10th until we have seven cats. We want these guys to be hungry enough to go into our traps.
Check back here in the next few days for the link to the Bergen Babies TNR blog and if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Also, for those who are curious about little Cheeto. He went to a great home in Bushwick and now has two brothers to wrestle with. I've been getting updates from his new mom and it sounds like he's fitting in quite nicely.

(Edited after I re-read the original post and realized this hadn't happened yet.)
Good luck with this, and thank you for organizing it! I walked down that block on Friday evening and a teeny little black fuzzball of a kitten dashed across the sidewalk right in front of me and hid under a parked car. Tried to coax it out but he or she was NOT having any of it. Damn kittens, they never listen to reason.

Here's the link to the Bergen Babies blog. I'll be posting daily updates on our progress with phase 1 of BBTNR.

Just checked out the updates and I must say to all those that helped you, you guys rock! You really went above and beyond (especially with the weather you endured) to help these kitties. I guess they got their little "Christmas miracle" early.

is there a reason why you don't ear tip them? -
All of the feral cats being released back to Bergen Street have been eartipped. The friendly ones that won't be returned were not eartipped.

thanks for replying. makes perfect (purrfect?) sense. i only questioned it because the way the OP wrote the first post, it sounded like they were being spayed/neutered without any ID and then released back, making the next round a whole lotta guesswork except for the posted photos on the blog.
glad they're being tipped.
thanks for making a difference!!!

I find that sometimes it's hard to get close enough to some of the ferals to see if they're ear tipped, so the photos are a good way to figure out if a cat you saw has been fixed. It's like a Plan B for observation.

The blog (http://blam.blogs.com/bergen_babies/) has been updated with video of the first three boys happy to be released. Yay! They're feral animals, so I know that they belong in the wilds of the streets that they know. I wish them health, warmth, and full bellies.

Great job, Violet! Those cats are so cute - especially the little guys. So sad finding the cat skeleton

I hope they stay healthy and safe -
Thank you, Flexi - but the blog isn't mine. The blog belongs to the folks who are running the project - lulu's momma. I think she's doing a great job.
Mr. Eye is learning that people = food, and petting = good feeling, and last night he started purring like there's a motor in him! He's just a little kitten who someone must've dumped into the cold streets when they saw that he has a problem with his eye. So he thought that people = betrayal and lonliness and cold. But he can't help but hold on to hope that maybe someone will love him and care for him. He's looking for a foster home (or an adoptive family who will prove to him that people = love). If anyone is interested...
Chatty Cathy, a real sweetheart, is also looking for an adoptive home. Once she knows you, she loves being pet. She butts her head into your hand hard, and then if you pet her she collapses on her side in bliss. She has a funny voice when she meows. She's very intrigued by birds out the window.
And the three kittens are just adoreable with their wide eyes and their pokey little tails. I think they'll be looking for homes soon, but lulu's momma can say for sure. I think that she'll be posting adoption information about all of the friendly cats, once the ferals are all released.
Mr. Chin is eating a lot, so we think he's feeling better. He's still got a few days of antibiotics left.
I think three of the girls (Baby's Momma, Wonton, and Gray Guy - who is actually a gal) are being released today. I'm going to check lulu's momma's blog later to find out how it went! -
I just read the whole blog and almost cried (I'm at work, this is not good  )
Thank you to everyone who is helping these poor ferals. You are all angels!
Good luck and congratulations on your success.
Nothing makes me happier than to know there are wonderful caring people like this in our community.

Here are the kitties that need foster homes or forever homes:
Kittens:

Cathy:
She really wants to trust someone so that they can play with her!
Mr. Eye:
He's really shy still, but if you pet him a little purr-motor starts up, and rolls over on his side so you can pet him more easily. -
My gosh. Cathy looks like my cat Tuly's twin!
-
I love the guy at the end with the squiny eye and the kitten with the splotchy nose. So cute!
Howdy, Stranger!
