watch out for cyclists!

Make sure to look behind them before they open a car door to make sure a cyclist is not coming! This morning, my friend rode past an accident on 36th and 6th where someoned opened their door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, causing the man to fall into oncoming traffic. He was hit by a box truck, and while originally responsive, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Please take a couple minutes today to tell your non-biking friends to be aware of bikers on the streets! These accidents are easily preventable.WNBC article Newsday article

  • Who the hell just flings the street side car door open without looking? That seems to be a normal logical thing to do. Not just because a cyclist could be coming but another car could be too close also. What a terrible preventable accident.
  • people do it all the time! i was once *stopped* on my bike in PS waiting for the light and this guy hit me with his car door!! i think people a lot of people are just used to the suburbs.

    Manhattan: Cyclist Killed in Accident
    By AL BAKER

A bicyclist riding northbound on the Avenue of the Americas yesterday morning died after he struck an open car door, fell off his bicycle and landed in the street, where he was hit by a truck, the police said. The cyclist, David Smith, 63, of West Ninth Street, was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead, the police said. The accident happened shortly before 8:30 a.m. in front of 989 Avenue of the Americas, near 36th Street, the police said. Mr. Smith, who was riding in a designated bicycle lane, hit the car’s door after someone on the passenger side opened it into his path, the police said. It was unclear if he was wearing a helmet. The police issued two summonses to the car’s driver, Benjamin Siano, 52, of Staten Island, for parking at a fire hydrant and for blocking a bicycle lane. They also issued a summons to his passenger, Augustus Browne, 31, of Staten Island, for opening a door unsafely into traffic, the police said.

This is why I ride as far away from the cars as I can get away with.
  • And this is why I *don't* ride a bike in the city! I've heard of way too many people who've been killed because people in this city do not respect bicyclists at all.
