South Slope - 5th Ave retail?

I'm picking up house and moving to South Slope. I'm familiar with Seventh Avenue south of 9th Street, but haven't spent much time on 5th Ave in those parts. At first glance, it looks like a lot of dollar stores. Any shops/restaurants of interest? I've seen posts on Kinara, which seems well recommended.

  • I'm digging Sidecar (5th btw 16th and Prospect) for drinks, burgers, etc. I like the vibe, it's not full of kids (no disrespect to the youngins).

I like working out at Harbor Fitness 5th/15th
  • There's a good teeney coffee place on one of the side streets, just west of 5th Ave, south side of the street...maybe 11th St?

and the soup/tamale shack on 4th Ave just south of the F train.
(they have vegetarian soup and tamales)

Colson Bakery (mmmm, financier), next to Barbes both located on 9th St @Sixth Ave

Eagle Provisions, Fifth Ave and . . . 19th St? not just kielbasa and beer!
(but lots and lots of kielbasa and even more beer)

Commonwealth is a friendly enuf beer-slinging establishment on Fifth Ave at 12th-ish.
The early shift guy is Gary, formerly of The Gate. He plays good and wonderfully varied music.

And now you are just that many steps closer to the wonders of Windsor Terrace (bagels) and Sunset Park (Mexican, Chinese, and Vietnamese wonders)

and best of all, a real live hardware store, Leopoldi's
    Fifth Ave near 8th St

good luck with the new home!

    :D
  • Lopez Bakery on 5th between 18th & 19th has yummy bread. The rosemary bread is tasty.

Big Apple Market on 5th between 18th & 19th is a good place to buy produce though the selection can be bare at times.

Vino Rojo (I think?) is a relatively new wine bar on 5th between 17th & 18th. Nice selection of wine and cheese.

Adam's Wine & Liquor across the street from the wine bar has a really nice selection of wine. Try the honey vodka from there sometime!
  • Puppet's Jazz reopening on 5th btwn 11th and 12th. http://puppetsjazz.com/
  • Thanks for the info!

Puppet's was always one of those places that totally confused me... was it a bar, a music venue, a cafe, a .... um .... puppet place?

Well the answer is music venue but I found it to be a bad music venue.. and I love Jazz. Loud/bad music that could be heard from the street and that is where I did my listening. I would check it out from outside and leave. Of course whoever was booking at the old lcation can be gone and in the new spot that music might be worth listening to.. I hope so.
  • L & T Gift Creations on 5th Ave between 14th and 15th. From the outside it looks like another dollar store but inside it's different. They have the cutest plates and bowls, little tea sets and sake sets. It's a little hard to describe but I love that place.
