Can you walk to Lowes? — Brooklynian

Can you walk to Lowes?

I bet Lowes has some great plants for my new place....... but someone said you cannot walk there. Is it that one cannot walk there, or it's dangerous to walk there? Is there a bus that goes there? Or is the car service inevitable? Thanks!

Comments

  • it's not a terrible walk from the R/F station at 4th and 9th. also the 75 bus runs up and down 9th st.
  • I walk down 11th all the time to Lowes. We bought a bunch of plants there and used our little cart to take them back - no problem!
  • It is physically impossible to walk to Lowes regardless of your current locale. It simply cannot be done, anyone attempting such a feat will surely fail.... anyone who claims otherwise in in cahoots with the others and is not to be trusted.
  • Anybody can walk there, it's just a bit of a schlep!!
  • I've walked there from my place along the PH/CH border... no biggie.
  • little bit of a walk never hurt anyone :D
  • I have walked there many times.. I am not all that far away.. I take the shopping cart with me and buy what I need and roll it back up the hill. You could walk one way and when you have your purchases call car service to go back.
  • Stick your thumb out, we'll pick you up on our way Sat. ;)

Yes, it is possible to walk to Lowes. You can also walk to the Atlantic Mall. NYers walk everywhere.
  • It depends on who you are. Some people cannot walk from Flatbush Farm to BAM.
  • Stop, stop stop!! I am beginning to feel that we are poking fun with some cruelty.

This is a legit question with consideration that the OP posted 5 times, prob is not Brooklynite and was asking a sincere question..Lighten up!!!!!

Now I have to admit the first time I walked to Lowes I had some questions myself. I questioned why I was feeling like an idiot? The real question was how did Lowes land up in PS to begin with? Geez... what the hell do we need these box stores I was saying to myself as I slid easily down the hill (think Slope)... and sludged up the hill with all those flowers thatI bought for cheaper than anywhere else I would have needed to drive to!!

Play nice,,,,, all ya sweet fellow posters.
  • It's a little empty on some 11th st. blocks past 3rd, but fine. If you're concerned, I'd walk along 9th. I've done this many many many times without any bad vibes.

Plus you can veer off for a nice view of our very own syphyllitic Gowanus Canal! (R.I.P. Sludgy.)

It's even easier from the smith/9th st stop which is pretty much right on top of lowes.

Hey! Yeah! Thanks, Veets!!!!!!!! I was actually seriously wondering about walking under the highway and across the canal........... it doesn't sound like that pleasant of a walk, and could potentially be dangerous-- who knows who likes to hang out next to the canal and highway waiting for some nice clean needles to appear! This little blonde could go strolling down the hill with my cart into no man's land!!!!!

Thanks for the genuine responses. I am going to use the buddy system and go on Sunday. :D
  • Your problem will not be the walk to Lowe's. Your problem will be the maddenin' crowds INSIDE Lowe's.

    also true!
  • Maddening crowds you say? Maybe I should wait until Monday.

And the god-awful employees, and the lack of stock on certain things.

I went to Lowe's countless times while planting my garden. However now that I don't need to go as frequently, I actually prefer the creepier walk to Home Depot on 19th if I can avoid Lowe's. I've just had too many bad experiences there.
  • We should do a poll on "What Store is Worse... Home Depot or Lowes.

Personally I avoid Home Depot at all cost and have had ok experiences in Lowes.

    I second that!
I dont think you can even compare Home Depot to Lowes -

Im really surprised caahyoko that you had a bad experience there. I find the people who work there to be really nice and they actually know where things are in the store. Maybe because the gardening section is mostly seasonal they don't stock up as quickly as they do the other departments.

Lowe's is also open very late and after about 8:30-9:00 it is pretty empty. Early on the weekends is good if you use self checkout otherwise you wind up on line with all the contractors and weekend warriors picking up large bulk items.

I'm hoping its just the current crop of employees--particularly the door people and cashiers. One time I had a spiky burberry bush in a gallon container which, duh, needs the bigger of their two bags to carry it home. I happened to be the last person my cashier was helping before their bathroom break, so when he realized he (and all of the cashiers next to him) was out of the big bags, he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. I had to find a manager to go get me a freakin plastic bag so I could walk home without stabbing myself with the plant. It took an extra 20 minutes to get out of there.

There are other incidents less flagrantly rude, but consistent enough to turn me off to the store for now.

Their stock that I can never get is the houseplant accessories, which they should have year round. It took them 5 weeks to get in orchid bark, etc.

I'll try them again in the spring. I'm sure those positions have high turn-over.

    Isn't that Gowanus?
  • they always lack things :(. even when their computers say its in stock. they said its not there. they might be on top of their shelves. they have the worst employee's ever. i wonder who the hell screens them.

very lazy group. only found a few of them willing to help.

Theoretically I guess it is !!

Doesn't make me feel any better.
  • Hate Home Depot. their selection is for shit, they have that creepy, dark parking lot and the last time I was there, the store was empty and their prices higher.

Give me Lowe's anytime! It's funny that people are complaining about the employees at Lowe's cause hubby and i always talk about how great they are and whenever you ask one a question, they actually know the answer. I also got a great deal on a Christmas tree there recently.
  • In my personal diagram of home improvement Hades, Home Depot is definitely a rung lower than Lowe's.

This weekend when I needed a fireplace grate, I sucked it up and when to Pintchik. Though I've encountered possibly the rudest employees in New York there, their stock is much more oriented to brownstone and apartment spaces rather than the suburbs-are-us stock of the big box boys.

They had exactly what I needed and were even kind of nice about it. And their was no air-raid siren going off at the exits either.

It may be a cliché, but it's also true -- the local guys often have a better selection, in part because they have to.
  • I've done the walk along 10th or 11th Streets to Lowe's and it's a little quiet. I'd do it by myself during the day but would want my husband with me once it gets dark, just because it's so deserted - there's little or no pedestrian OR car traffic.
