exactly how long have you been in NYC, in years?

I picked the last option, but I'm assuming that going away for college doesn't count as leaving for the purposes of this survey.

6 1/2 years in Brooklyn, after I wised up -
Subject: In NYC
Been in NYC 18 of my nearly 40 years...17.5 of them in PS
My wife was born here in PS...
My 6 year old daughter was born here...
Both of my parents were born in NYC. Dad in Brooklyn, Mom in Manhattan.
(They did the middle class stampede to L.I.) -
Mom was from Queens, Dad was a Brooklyn boy, and I was raised here in the Slope. Except for the college years in Red Sox territory (ooh, they didn't like Yankees fans up there), and 3 years upstate, I've been in Park Slope my whole life.

Okay, so it's only 40 respondents so far, but I find it interesting that:
* Not a single respondent so far has been here less than a year
* Only 15% of the respondents have been here for one to five years
* Almost half the respondents (44%) have been here 20 years or more
I'm sorely tempted to bookmark this thread for the next time someone comes blasting on to this site calling everyone here "newbies," "you people"-ing us, and making asshat assumptions about how long folks here have been in New York, -

Maybe those who haven't been here long aren't interested in this thread, have you ever imagined that possibility? Ever hear of a "self-selected group"? Probably not. Remind me to never ask you to do any surveys for me.

Born and raised. Grew up in Midwood (21 years) and hopped around to Canarsie, Seagate and Williamsburg before moving to Park Slope about six weeks ago. So far, so good.

Hardly a random survey for sure - does indeed violate the first rule of quantitative research.
But it's still interesting - but I would agree it really doesn't need self-serving analysis. -

re: self-selection, true enough, but one thing the results DO show is that not "everyone" reading and posting on the site is new in town.
of course, people might be lying or fudging their responses, but that's true of online personas (personae?) in general. for all i KNOW, restless native has never left his home town of peoria heights. -
i'm actually posting for york uk :P.
-
Since 1969 except for 1 year in London.

Oh, good gravy. Of course I've heard of a self-selected group, and there's no need for you to be so condescending. I suppose I should have known you'd be unable to resist saying something like this, especially since you're one of the people who makes a disproportionate amount of nasty, presumptuous remarks about all the supposed newcomers here. :roll:sweet tea wrote: re: self-selection, true enough, but one thing the results DO show is that not "everyone" reading and posting on the site is new in town.
Which is the only point I was really trying to make, as it's all one can truly infer from a very informal survey like this one. All I meant was that it's clear that there are plenty of people on this site who have been in NYC for a good, long time, and it's annoying when people make the assumption that everyone on the site is a noob. Thanks for putting it more clearly, sweet tea. -

The "supposed" newcomers.
The "mythical" hillbilly transplants.
The "so-called" yups.
If I were to believe the way this message board makes it out to be, it would be like I'm the only one who sees these mysterious creatures, kind of like the elusive sasquatch.
