  • They've had a Google Maps/MTA subway map mashup for a long time. I use it ALL the time -- it's especially handy when giving people directions. This is a new version, and it includes station layouts (something I've long hoped for because sometimes it helps a lot to know which exit or entrance is best to use) and several other new features that make it even more useful. Now if they only had one that included bus routes...

Around these two new features onNYTurf is looking for community help! There is far to much data to collect from various sources and I only speak English and some high school level spanish, so I'm not very good at translating the map to Espanol, much less Chinese, Korean or Russian, which could server the NYC community well. So onNYTurf has two new community projects, the Subway Map Station Details Project and the Subway Map Translations Project. These are our second and third community projects. Our first of course is the ongoing Subway Map Entrances and Exits Project, which is going great. 90% - 100% of Brooklyn will be in place sometime around the new year. Though we need some help in Queens. You can spot which stations we still need details for on the map now, as most visitors have probably noticed, but if not click some of the stations out in Far Rockaway.

But I digress. This story is about the new community projects.

First our Expanded Station Details project. There have been a lot of requests to add various information to each station. From things like schedule info, and disability access, to transfer details and which entrances are best for which line. In addition its not been lost on me that the MTA's information on each station is not well organized. This project will centralize all information in wiki pages, one for each station, that can be loaded into the map. This will make it easy to learn everything you need to know about a station.
