Good bike shop
I've read the old threads, etc.
I just obtained a super expensive bike (a Cannondale) from a friend for next to nothing.
She had some weird petals on it...she said they were really expensive. They're very small (can you tell I'm a big biker?!).
I want to replace those petals with normal-size petals and also adjust the seat and check the brakes, etc.
How do I walk into a store with this very fancy bike and not get ripped off because I know squat?
She said that if I didn't like those petals that most people would pay good money for them and getting regular petals is a downgrade.
Where can I go in/near the S. Slope to get this taken care of?
Also, anybody know where I can buy something cheap to throw over my two bikes so I can put them in the backyard year-round without any damage? A tarp or a plastic cover.....

I like Roy's Sheepshead Cycle (http://roysbikes.com/) on Coney Island Avenue near Avenue X or Y. I have no connection with the shop except that I bought my Jamis hybrid (not a fancy bike, but it works beautifully for me) there a lot of years ago and they have an excellent repair facility and retail shop. I make no pretense about being any kind of expert bicyclist (and I'm overweight, so I look like a total buffoon in spandex), and they give me excellent service without any attitude whatsoever.
Before they allowed me to order a bike they measured me up, down and sideways (I thought they were making a three-piece suit), and asked me at length about my riding habits and preferences. After all that, they suggested a $400 bike, even though I could have stretched some and bought something way more expensive. They weren't looking for the commission, they were looking to get me a bike that would suit me.
If they sold skis and boots and all the ski accessories as well as bicycles, I'd never need to visit another store! -
First of all, flowers have petals and bicycles have pedals

You've got a bike with "clipless" pedals which are designed to engage with "clipless" shoes. It's similiar to ski binding/boot system. They're great if you are a racer or ride long distances because it increases pedaling efficiency. If you just want to go down the block to buy some milk they're not so great because you need to put on special shoes.
Not that it matters, but when they were first introduced (10-15 years ago) clipless pedals were very expensive, but not so much anymore. Unless they're totally the latest/greatest they're not worth more than ~$50 used.In any event, they really don't make a whole lot of sense for the casual biker.
It's cheap (~$20-$30 parts/labor) to swap those out for some "normal" (any shoes will do) pedals. If you have an adjustable wrench you could probably do it yourself.
For basic stuff like this I highly recommend Dixon's on Union b/t 7th and 6th. Nice people, good service. They don't carry the highest end stuff but it sounds like you just need some very basic parts and a tune up. -
ah, a 'pedal' lesson. much appreciated! I'm usually better at spelling, but yesterday my brain hit maximum capacity after a long work day :-)
yes, these seem to be pedals to be worn with special shoes. i want some normal, every day pedals. I'm not sure how expensive they are, but know that this bike cost way more than I'd ever spend on a bike myself
once the weather starts getting warm, I'll head over and get it sorted.
thanks! -

Thanks for the Roy's recommendation. I just came back from there. I said I wanted a tune up and he said "you don't need one - this bike is too new, and I"m not going to charge you for something you don't need". He adjusted the seat to my height, showed me how to take the front wheel on and off (something I struggled with) and installed a speedometer for me. In and out in 20 minutes. It was cheap, fast and SUPER friendly. -
What'd you do with the old pedals?

I kept them to see if I want to sell them. They told me I could get around $50 for them. Interested? -

Possibly...do you have any pictures or see any brand names/numbers on them? -
I lent my camera out and don't have it back yet
They are very new (I don't think my friend ever used them either). They say "Shimano SPD" sm-pd22
Does that help? -

Actually, it looks like the sm-pd22 is an adapter that lets you ride clipless pedals with regular shoes! http://osmtbr.pinkbike.com/buysell/191665/

The underlying pedals themselves are probably Shimano PD-M505, M520, M540 or M959.
Not the type I'm looking for, but perhaps someone else here is in the market for Shimanos.[/img] -
Flexi,
As a new bike owner myself, I've found www.bikeforums.net really helpful. I think they have a trade thread if you want to try getting rid of your pedals.
Good luck! I hope to see you on the road

bicycle station on vanderbilt (at bergen?) is awesome - sometimes if you go to buy something they ask something like, "are you sure you don't want this one, it's cheaper and maybe even better quality". ...and they won't fix something that isn't broken, etc. they are also one of the few nyc bike shops to carry used parts. they are so good.
