New Dog Rules: South Park Slope
I am in south park slope (Prospect Ave & 7th), and one of the park areas near my building is closed off with a written posting having something to do with a meeting regarding new off leach rules. Does anyone know anything about this?
ALSO, watch out... my wife got an off leach ticket yesterday morning. Again, they are on the look out in south slope.
Anyone know anything more?

That's why I keep a tight leash on my wife all the time :-) -
no idea what that particular thing is, although I have noticed that it is no longer posted in prospect park that off-leash starts at 5pm in the winter months (Nov- March)
I don't see why not, because it's bloody cold and dark in the park after 5 these days . . . it's not like there's sports or toddlers competing for the space. -
I would have no problem if they tightened up the off leash rules a bit in Prospect Park. The park should be for people first and dogs/cats/farm animals second. My family uses that park all year round and I don't want to have to compete with dogs, as much as I love them, for use of the park. Also - sorry to say it, but those few inconsiderate dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs are ruining it for the rest of you.

I could say the same thing about inconsiderate People ruining the park experience. How about those picnicers and BBQers that leave garbage all around and how about those muggers and rapists ruining it for other folks. .. not to mention all those babies in their all terraine strollers being pushed all over the grass..not to mention... whatever...

I'm pretty sure the park is a better and safer place when the dog owners are using it in the evening.
People with dogs make it better for people without dogs.
Are you really walking around out there on the long meadow in the evening in the winter, Jamzer?
The irresponsible leavers of trash (birthday parties, beer bottles or dog poo) are a different issue. I think most of the people who bother to care for their dogs so well that they are willing to brave the cold are the same people who respect the privilege and clean up after their dog. As a dog owner, you pretty much have to - out of your own self interest since you are walking around all over the park every single day. -
I run in the park in winter, in dark or near-dark hours. That said, I don't mind people and their dogs in the park, leashes or not, as long as
* their dogs don't trip me or run after me
* they don't break my neck by whipping around with those telescoping leash thingies
* they realize that ensuring the above is their responsibility, not other human pedestrians' (and not the dogs' fault either)
* ditto the above re: the park is not a doggy toilet
But the vast majority of dog owners in the park are very conscientious about all this, as I assume is Pitu. -

Hey all those ideas seem appropriate and good behavior items for any one who is in charge of their dog. the park can be shared by humans and dogs if some cooperation and common sense prevails.

I live beside the parks that were once okay to run dogs in but for the past 5 years have been overrun by inconsiderate slobs who don't pick up after their dogs. About 3 years ago they started locking up the gates, and even though I have been a member of FIDO since 1998 and using the offleash hours at Prospect Park, I am happy in many ways to have the gates locked near my house. I am so tired of seeing the poop and garbage that most dog owners leave behind. These were never dog parks in the first place, and it irks me to see people abusing the privileges they have as if they were rights....
I don't enjoy walking through the pathways beside my house dodging the dogsh*t. And it is the newcomers to the area that are the worst offenders.
Howdy, Stranger!
