Habana Outpost — Brooklynian

Habana Outpost

Who's been to Habana Outpost - New York's "first solar-powered restaurant and market"?

The image is from a recent New York Times article ... apparently somebody stole their bicycle-powered blender.

Thanks for the tip: Set Speed

  • Subject: not into the lines

I went to H.O. twice, and neither time was I able to successfully get food, drink, or a table that didn't wobble like a mofo or have to share with a stranger. Not that I don't like strangers, but it's lame when you're on a date with someone, and you have to negotiate who stands in line, who saves the seat, whether or not you're into the fact that it could rain in two seconds, and whether or not the half-hour line is really worth that overpriced Corona and grilled ear of corn. The food didn't look good enough, the patrons didn't look happy enough, and the servers didn't look talented enough to merit my hard earned money. I didn't see a single person with a plate of food- just a line of 20 odd people order, very slowly, to the one woman who was handling orders and drinks. I am officially boycotting that place for being a wee bit too Cuban for me. I don't live in a Communist country, therefore I shouldn't have to wait in a m'r'f'king bread line. Especially if I'm paying to do so.
  • I do want to check it out pretty badly, but I'm lazy...so maybe sooner or later. Based on what I've been hearing, are there really no actual private sit down tables? I'm getting the impression you're either SOL or doing it up communal style.

I gotta admit, I share alot of your peeves about restaurants and after reading what you posted, I'm not eager to go there. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

yes, there are communal tables unless you are early enough to snag a 4 seater and one person can go up. the place is pretty diy, but judging from the crowds there, not one person matters. as i put on my blog ltjbukem.blogspot.com, those $2.50 pints of bklyn lager go a far way with the boho hipsters in fg.

and i've been there 4 times and have never tasted the food. i only go for drinks.

I too have only been there for drinks. It's a nice hang late on a weekend night with some friends for beer, especially if you like to be outside and don't want to get eaten by the moquitoes at the Alibi.

The vibe is definitely DIY and laid back, though, so if you have any A-type in you, you'll want to avoid.
  • I've been there a few times, for drinks and food. I think the food is delicious, personally, and it's a great place to go with a small group on a hot summer night. It is hard to find seating, especially private seating, but not impossible. The beer is cheap and good, too.

definitely not a place for a first date- unless you're college students at pratt and don't mind the wobbly tables, uneven service, bad paint job, tacky barbed wire painted glow in the dark yellow, etc.

but for a chill time, or a chance to ogle some neighborhood hotties on the weekend flea markets, do make a point of going.

Well said. If there was a thumbs-up emoticon on this board, I'd use it. Or, I suppose I could post a picture of a neighborhood hottie.
  • Subject: I Love this place!

Wow I'm shocked at the comments about Habana. Maybe I'm biased cause I used to live in that building and play where the tables now stand...but i love the privacy it seems to have, the bright colors and best of all a great margahrita! Anyway these hot guys walk in and out of the place all the time.
  • I've been a few times. The first two times I gave up on getting served adn just looked at the flea market. Both times, the "waitress" was too busy hanging out and chatting with her friends. The third time I went I successfully ordered, but she neglected to tell me that you have to take your check to the truck to put in your own order. After standing there for 15 minutes with an antsy 2 y.o., I asked for progress at the truck and then found out they needed the ticket. The final time I went or will go), my son was riding in the groovy Batmobile when the staff chased a huge rat right into my path knocking over my stoller and spilliing the contents everywhere.

The food's not all that great, either.
  • My husband and I are fond of the Manhattan branch (well, the take-out half anyway, because I hate the tiny tables and ridiculous lines at the main restaurant). So we tried the Outpost on an incredibly hot Saturday afternoon, and sloped around looking at the vendor's wares while we waited for our (excellent) cubano. My husband has spent some time in Cuba and said the atmosphere was pretty authentic, for better or for worse.

But a rat--ugh. I mean, we all know that all the restaurants have them, but...
