Down where I'm at, it's pretty safe, but I don't know about as far north as Dean St. I generally stay south of St. Mark's.

Grew up in a real brownstone on Dean btw Franklin and Bedford over 30 years ago. I'm wondering about safety on Fulton St/Franklin near the A train stop? Tried to do some photography in that area about 15 years ago--Drug dealers all over the place. People telling me not to point my camera their way; a cop that was standing in the background watching for my safety; eventually, I was confronted by a couple of dealers who wanted me to stop taking pictures. Fearing my life, I offered up my camera, but all they wanted me to do was to pull the film out, which I did. After which I took the A train downtown and got Pastrami Sandwich at Junior's and wondered to myself with an internal cold sweat why the hell was I still alive  .
I could have sworn I read something a few years later about somebody getting shot around there for doing what I was trying to do. So yeah, is safety still an issue round there. -
I live right around here, but am a newcomer. I don't know it seems fine to me. I mean, I make sure not to do anything stupid when I'm on my way home late at night, but generally I feel pretty safe around here. The area is really well lit at all hours of the day and I've also noticed cops around a lot, especially in the early evening. I could be naive but it seems ok, despite the close proximity to the armory, which I try to avoid.

i recently started carrying a tire iron with me when i walk around the neighborhood at night. makes me feel pretty safe.

Or maybe someone will think that you're bluffing. Or someone may call the cops on you because they think you're dangerous and mentally unbalanced.
That's what I would do if I saw someone around the neighborhood carrying a makeshift weapon. And for other people, well I can't speak for others, but I've generally found that walking around with an aggressive stance tends to broadcast, "SOMEONE PLEASE F--K WITH ME!!!" which is not a good thing unless you are actually looking for a fight. -
yes, i thought of that -- that's why i keep it in my jacket where people can't see it.

If you're looking for trouble, it'll most certainly come.
Just sayin. -
hmmm, what do you mean? if someone carries pepper spray does that mean theyre looking for trouble? trust me, i'm not looking for trouble.

You guys are seriously a bunch of fraidy cats. Grow some backbone and walk the streets like a man (or woman). It's smart to take precautions and be careful but please, you guys are always whining about some boogeyman or another.

I had funny experience a few years ago. I was trying to sell an apartment on Sterling Place and Flatbush to a young lady who's father grew in Brooklyn 40 years ago and left for Denver. He was giving her pointers about how to never ride the subway because it wasn't safe, always stay off the streets after dark, etc. She looked at him like he was from Mars. And so did I.
Fifteen years ago is not today. You have to constantly do reality checks in Brooklyn n'hoods. They're always changing. What was an absolute truism 5 years ago maybe as outdated as the Knicks five years later. -

Guest, please read the rules of the site (available at the top of every page on the site at the link labeled "READ THE RULES"). You'll get your point across much better if you're a little nicer about it. -
I regularly walk south from the Kingston C stop at 10:30 or 11:00pm and have never had any problems--there's always at least a couple of other people from the same train walking with me. I usually take the bus or a car if I'm coming home much later than that, but that's my habit everywhere I've lived in the city. Things are pretty quiet around here at night, and pretty friendly during the day--great neighborhood in general.

I live near gardengirl and I'd have to agree. I work strange hours and have had to run out either to walk my dog or buy toilet paper after eleven and haven't run into trouble, although I try to avoid walking around much after that. The key is getting to know your neighbors. I find that I always know people to say hello to when I leave my apartment. We're a friendly lot over here!

Thanks to all of you who responded to my question. It seems like a friendly, quiet nabe. I look forward to being part of it.
Howdy, Stranger!
