so. I haven't upgraded to leopard. fine.

I installed some security updates last night and my mac decided it hated me. it would get to the Mac OS X part of start up, and the blue progress line would get all the way to the end and then ... it would just hang. so. I got out my Tiger CD and booted from that, which worked fine, except nothing but firefox works anymore. then, today, I have installed all software updates and the machine is turning on and working just fine. yay!

but. what does it mean when you click on an application and the little icon for it only bounces once and then doesn't launch? do I need to reinstall?

oh. should I upgrade to leopard? it requires 512 MB of ram and I have 750 MB or so. G4.

    Hum.. went I took my mac to the genius bar because my hard drive crashed, the first thing they asked me was "were you installing Leopard?"
    It seems there are some issues they're sorting out with the new program.
    I'm not being very helpful, but I just thought it was an interesting side note.

    If I have computer problems, I stand over the computer with both hands on my face and say OHMIGOD! Then my wife comes over and fixes it. Works every time.

    Don't upgrade to Leopard! The new kitty has quite a bit of fleas. As for the application loading problem, maybe something was corrupted? Try fixing the disk before reinstalling.

    Press (shift, apple, u) in finder to bring up utilities folder—double click on disk utility—the rest is pretty straightforward.

    not in all cases. i've been running it on my G4 Powerbook since it came out and haven't encountered a single issue with it or any of my apps running poorly. but i might be a lucky one.

    I haven't had any problems with Leopard on my Macbook Pro. But I did back up everything to an external mirrored RAID before installing it.
    Time Machine and Spaces are both great features, and worth upgrading for.

    Does the app open when you open it directly from the Applications folder?

    If it does, try removing the old app icon from the dock and replacing it with a fresh icon from the Applications folder.

    Also, from the might-as-well department: it's supposed to be good practice to repair permissions both before and after installing System updates. & unplug external drives during.

    ... sticking with 10.4 for now.

    hopefully the updates will fix ya up real good! im kinda bummed though that ProTools doesn't run on Leopard at all. There goes my plan of finally installing it on my laptop :? guess i'll haveta wait til march when the new Leopard compatible Protools is supposed to be released. i want it now!

    I know. I'm getting impatient too. And then you have to wait till the plug-ins update their software too. And plus there's version 7.4 to buy...jeez...maybe I'll crack out my reel to reel recorder. :roll: Oh, but that's right, no phantom power.

    At work, I installed Leopard on two new imacs right when it came out (the macs were less than a month old). I had to archive and install, which wasn't too bad. But there have been system updates since then. Were those fixes for the Leopard install problems??

    the applications don't open from the applications folder and I don't have the option of repairing the disk. life blows. can't decide if I just want to give leopard a shot or not. probably will. just for shits and giggles. see you on the leopard (or back to tiger) side.

    Make sure you back everything up on an external drive before installing it, and keep the drive disconnected while you install.

    leopard appears to have taken. once I confirm that vpn and netconnect/remote desktop work, I'll be back in biz.

    I have two 500 GB OWC Mercury Elite Pro drives. They're individual drives linked by a Firewire. I set them up as a RAID 1 using Disk Utility (incredibly easy and self-explanatory). This program is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder. It also does other cool stuff, like make password-protected disk images, and more. Just make sure the drives are blank before you set up the RAID, or whatever was there will be written over. I also have all my mp3s backed up on a 3rd drive, a LaCie ("design by Porsche") 250 GB that's almost never been turned off for the past 5 years or so and has still been running reliably.

    I've been using the RAID for my Time Machine backup, and it's been solid so far. I like it, because even if one of the drives fails, the data's safe on the other drive.

    seriously, back this one up. we use external hard drives all the time at work - lacie, maxtor, western digital, whoever - and they all eventually fail. we often send out failed drives to recover data and most of the time we can't get the data back, even when we send them to the super pricey clean room forensic folks.

    so. word of warning to all - don't assume that one data location is ever enough. you need at least two, preferably unconnected.

    It's backed up with double redundancy (to my mirrored RAID). It's just the drive I run iTunes off of.
