  • I took the time to read the review and... having been brought up afew blocks from Difaro's.... and being 20 years old before I knew there was pizza that did not taste like that.... This is Stellar review..
Good luck to them and you bet I will stop by and try.
  • I will definitely be trying this place. Nice review.
  • Thanks for posting this. Sounds great.
  • This place deserves the hype. I've been there twice and really liked it both times. The only thing to stay away from is the regular takeaway slice. The square slices are wonderful and a veggie delivery pie I got was really delicious.

But the regular slice is really the best way to judge a place. If it fails that test, that doesn't bode well...

Yeah... If a pizza is really stellar then the re-heat required for your one slice won't destroy it. the deal on Ave J is that they keep those pies moving so that the single slices are sold so quickly they never sit there long enough to need the re-heat. I am wishing this place great good luck and though I don't eat pizza often I am gonna get over there and give it a try.

...and yet Grimaldi's doesn't serve a single slice.

    i didn't think DiFara's did, either...
  • I wasn't talking so much about the slice vs. pie issue (although DiFara's definitely serves individual slices). My point is that if the pizza isn't great without a bunch of toppings, then it's not great.
  • From the comments section:

I only tried the regular slice and it was no better than one from an average pizzeria with a bit of fresh basil dropped onto it. Half the slice was endcrust, leaving only a few bites that were even close to having the proper balance (and even those were off -- I could barely taste sauce or cheese, only crust and basil). I know better than to judge a place based on one visit so I'll definitely stop in again the next time I'm in the neighborhood. I'll also make sure to try the grandma slice this time and will hope that I just got one from a bad/old slice pie.

Understood and agreed. To me, Shinybeast's mention of the "regular takeaway slice," placed more emphasis on the "takeaway" bit, not the "regular" bit. I think that most takeaway slices, unadorned or not, are okay at best (other than places like DiFara's which has amazing turnover). So, in my mind, a takeaway slice is a poor way to judge a place.

For whatever reason, the single plain slices they serve up aren't that great. I generally agree with the "regular slice" test. The full pies are treated entirely differently (read: better everything). Not sure why. I haven't experienced that before (my favorite neighborhood plain slice from Joe's on 5th is exactly the same as what you get with a full plain pie). I thought that I just got a bad slice, but saw that others felt the same way. Long story short, try the square slices (several different varietals) or order a full pie.

UPDATE: To clairfy, what I mean is that their plain Margherita pie (picture here) is not what they use for single takeaway slices.
  • MY HUSBAND AND I WALKED TO PEPPE'S ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND I AM THRILLED THAT WE DID!
MIKE THE PIZZA MAN WAS AMAZING AND SO WAS HIS PIZZA!
I GREW UP 5 BLOCKS AWAY FROM DI FARA AND ATE IT ALL MY LIFE. THIS IS DEF NOT DI FARA, BUT THE GRANDMA SLICE WITH CHUNKS OF GARLIC WAS TOO DIE FOR AS WAS THE YUMMY BRUSCHETTA SLICE. WE ALSO HAD AN ORDER OF JUST A FEW SLICES OF THE FRESH MOZZERELLA DRIZZLED WITH OLIVE OIL AND IT WAS GREAT!
THE PLACE IS TINY, THERE ARE 3 OR 4 STOOLS BY A COUNTER.
MIKE THE PIZZA MAN IS AMAZING, AND SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN PLACE. ITS SO OBVIOUS HE IS THE ONE THAT MAKES IT WHAT IT IS.
WE ENDED UP CHATTING AND HE GAVE ME A GREAT OLD ITALIAN RECIPE FOR PASTA WITH PEAS!
I WILL DEF BE ORDERING THE 3 CHEESE PIES TO MY HOUSE SOON!
  • This place has been written up all over the place. My pizza-loving husband just took me to Difara's on Saturday for the first tme... He places it above Grimaldi's (wooaah!) but I wasn't as impressed, except for the fact that the older gentleman running the joint took the pizza out of the oven with his bare hands!!

We're going to Peppe's on Sunday. I'll let you know what we think.
  • Being new to the slope (Oct '07) I have yet to come across a pizza place that I have truly enjoyed. In your opinions what would have to be the best pizza place in town? Thanks in advance.

It strikes me that if you are a true New Yorker you are in that place of the Mystique of Pizza. Those of us who have been blessed with growing up a stones throw from a pizza place like DiFara have come up with the illusion that THAT Is what pizza tastes like. Now that is a hard stone to keep throwing thru your life as you eat pizza in other places and invariably compare.

I remember those nights coming back to Brooklyn from going to that university on Broadway and 116th street and hoping that I made it back by 11pm on the D train so I could catch that slice from the very last full pie .....all hot and steamy and not eat it there but to have the joy of eating it on the way home on a frigid Jan nite, such as this. Ah how it warmed my hands and soul.

Now that sounds so postive but think how it taints your reality of the moment when you just grab "a slice ."

My point.. those of us who grew up eating Difara or Grimaldi or that other joint in Coney Island have the unique and cursed position of not being able to judge a slice in the moment. Right now we delve in to that slice and are carried back to that Prusiant moment.
  • Hehe...Embarrassing though it is to admit, my hubbie went to med school in rural Pa on Lake Erie. Try moving from the city life to there and dealing with the crap that was considered to be a good slice in those parts (think Papa Johns as tops). So glad to be back in the city.

BTW some of you may remember me b*tching about TW and Dell on this site recently. Just thought it might be funny to note that the d just popped off my laptop an is now sitting on the table as I try to press the stupid little black button left in its place to make my point.

Anyone need a d...scrabble lovers out there

I don't want to start yet another pizza war, but Grimaldi's is NOT GREAT PIZZA and shouldn't even be uttered in the same breath as Di Fara.

Any true New Yorker would agree. Grimaldis is what out of towners think is "REAL AUTHENTIC BROOKLYN PIZZA".......take a look at who is making the pies next time and how inauthentic it all is!
    Its like Patsy's!

I was with you until Patsy's (which Grimaldi's also used to be called, btw). The original Patsy's in Spanish Harlem is actually great. All the spinoffs are not.
  • I was referring to all the Patsy's in the city....have not been to the one in harlem.

    my bad.
  • Sam's Restaurant downstairs on Court Street -
I hadn't been there for a while and went not to long ago and forgot how absolutely fabulous their pizza is. I am a big John's of Bleeker Street fan and I have to put this one slightly higher than theirs.

I will definitely try this Pepes this weekend.
  • I used to live a block from Patsy's in East Harlem. That shit is great. I've been meaning to take a return trip there but of course it's the middle of nowhere. Was great to live near it though. Even if I did eat pizza 4 nights a week.
  • Went to Peppe last weekend and enjoyed our pizza very much!
Unfortunately, we just called for DELIVERY and they refused us because we were too far, and they wouldn't just deliver a PIE!
I spoke directly to the owner PEPPE , and told them that their menu clearly states a $10 minimum and when I asked them last weekend if they deliver to Union Street they said "Of Course"....
Now Peppe is telling me he "plays it by ear" when and where they want to deliver.
Now lets see, this place is TINY with 4 stools and a counter and MOST of their business is take out AND delivery, so wouldn't a smart business owner organize so that he had enough man power to deliver to all of Park Slope?

On the bright side, the very lovely and amazing MIKEY (the man who actually makes all that delicious pizza) called us just minutes ago to apologize! What a sweetheart! This man deserves his own pizza parlor!
I would follow him to any pizza joint!
Too bad! We were going to be a very regular customer!
  • nubnu wrote: ...so wouldn't a smart business owner organize so that he had enough man power to deliver to all of Park Slope?
i am truly sorry that they won't deliver to you.

as a south sloper, i have gotten the shaft from many places up your way in terms of delivery. i feel your pain.

(through bites of pizza, no doubt)
  • Peppe basically told my husband he doesn't need our money
    How rude?

I hope Mikey The Pizza Man gets his own shop one day!
He gave me a great recipe for pasta with peas!
  • Wow...You people take pizza way too seriously. Like my husband. :)
  • brooklynisbetter wrote: Wow...You people take pizza way too seriously. :)
That's something like an oxymoron. Or at least a contradiction in terms.

Well, to be fair, Union Street is a long delivery from where they're located, especially if you live up near 7th and 8th. I thought I was pushing it for a delivery range and I live in South Slope. Also, remember with the size of the place they can't really afford to expand their delivery range too much. I doubt they can turn out a lot of pizzas in that space.

    Care to share the recipe?

I have to put a plug in for Pizza Wagon in Bay Ridge. Every time my girlfriend and I go to Century 21 we stop there. Fantastic pizza. I wish that one was coming to 5 ave.
  • I had the recipe written on the one and only menu I took from them, and I threw it out in anger.....Now I regret it, even though I am thinking about calling Mikey and asking him again.
