Robbed in Clinton hills — Brooklynian

Robbed in Clinton hills

:( My car was broken into Monday night or early tues morning. IT was Parked on the corner of Hall & Dekalb ave. I normally keep change in my ashtray they took that (all of it Probaly about 3.00 dollars in quarters) and in my truck I had some christmas gifts that I was going to return after the holidays to Victoria secrets & Macy. It's funny that they didn't take my radio or my spare wallet with $100 in it under my seat :)
I felt so bad ,pissed and angry I wanted to fight someone, since driving in NY 24 years this was the first time this has happen to me, I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

I Reported it to the prect don't know what that will do. I was pissed xmas morning. felt like charlie brown.

I live in Crown heights nobody ever bothers my car I visit clinton and get robbed

  • Welcome to the sad reality. The location you parked at is one of the prime targets. Over a three year period I had my car broken into about 9-10 times. Finally I gave up and park in the garage on vanderbilt.

The police will just give you lip service. They care a damn and cannot even show genuine sympathy.
  • Yeah I try to avoid Hall, also waverly. Dont leave anything visible in the car. Phone charger, GPS cables, mounting bracket, etc, should always be taken out. I leave absolutely nothing visible in the car. Then I pray until I return to the car.
  • Thanks for the feed back,
  • just another example of why i dont keep a car here :? sorry to hear of your break in, they are not fun at all.
  • Very sorry to hear about your break in. That sucks.

Hall Street between Myrtle and DeKalb gets sooo many car break ins. Every week or two I see a pile of smashed auto glass on the curb. It pisses me off. I try to never park there.

Please report your break in to the police. It's not going to get your stuff back, but its important for us to let the cops know just how often there are break ins on the street.

Ive done this numerous times, but to no effect Since I did not have comprehensive insurance, they wouldnt even note a complaint until I insisted on it.
  • Good advice on the GPS cables. My car got broken into last week in front of my house. Nothing taken, but decided they were probably looking for GPS because of dash mount. Palais glass on Atloantic does a fast replacement. Oner said he has gotten a lot of broken windows - holiday season a lot of people have gifts in the car and more and more of us have GPS, the car-radios of the 21st century. Only other time I have been broken into in the neighborhood was on, ta-dah, Hall Street last year at this time.

BTW you weren't "robbed". Robbed is when they stick a gun in your face or when they threaten you, etc, in person. Still sucks, tho, to haveyour car broken into.
  • Thank you for the reccomendation for Palais Glass. They did a great job and I highly reccomend them, especially if you are in a hurry.

Unfortunately, I found this out because of a break in this weekend, and I have to admit, I feel very naive about this. I've lived in various parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and I've been in CH for a few years now. When some friends decided to visit from out of town, I told them it that parking on the street was a viable option. Not more than 12 hours after their middle of the night arrival was their car broken into, parked on Dekalb and Waverly. The car is an average Sedan, 6 years old. No GPS, No CD player. Nothing electronic was left in plain vision. Apparently the hot item was the the jacket left in the back seat. (Just a regular winter coat.)

I can't seem to wrap my brain around why this happened. A break in for a coat? Should I have reccomended they find a garage, even though my own car was parked down the block? Should I now think twice about leaving clothing in the back seat? Should I think twice about street parking althogether? I've never had an incident myself, and I thought we took all the proper precautions. Or, was this just a routine for these parts during the holiday season, as the officer told me, one of the 12 break ins that were reported that day?
  • honestly, they'll break in for anything. when i was living on 4th Ave my roommate's girlfriend had her car broken into while we were out at dinner (werent gone more than two hours). They left her stereo, and suitcase. But stole her briefcase filled with work papers and one boot. ONE BOOT.
  • While things have definitely gotten better with regard to crime this is still New York... It's pretty simple, don't leave ANYTHING in your car if you're parking it on the street overnight. Not even something you think is worthless.

If you're parking in an area prone to break ins you may even want to take it back the old school, pre-gentrification, break in prevention methods... Leave all your compartments (glove, center console, etc.) empty and open. Also leave your doors unlocked. At least then anyone who is interested will know there is nothing in the car. If they want to get in and take a look anyway they won't break your window because the door is open.

If your car is nice and someone would want to steal it you should probably be parking in a garage anyway...
  • This whole situation is just so frustrating b/c I don't think CH has a bad problem with car break ins, it's just a few key areas. I wish we could hire a private security guard to just spend each night sitting on the corner of Hall St/St James and Willougby, discouraging the theives who prey on those few blocks.
  • Good luck with that. There was a security company watching some houses on Gates a few years back and also running a small prostitution service on the side.

If there ever was an area that needed police video surveillance it's this one. If you want to go private just set up a video camera or a time lapse still camera and catch the action as it happens and turn it over to your local law enforcement.
  • Sorry to hear that. It sux to have your things violated.
My friend parks on park. Leaves nothing in the car. Came out the other day to find her wiper blades gone, and her "saab" sign, even the chrome piece that says turbo gone. Crazy.

I've had my battery stolen a few times around Clinton, but not recently. For a while I resorted to removing it after parking and bringing it inside!

But I have to admit, in spite of this.... in 6 years here I still haven't had the amount of auto break-ins that I had living in the city. There I came out to find auto vandalism several times a year. The most annoying was finding slashed tires. Usually it was broken glass Even though I never left anything inside. Had to repeatedly replace glass for nothing since the creeps never found anything to steal.
  • When I was violently mugged the cops at the 88th precinct were great. They made a huge effort to document and investigate my case and eventually caught the guy who had mugged more than a dozen women around the Clinton-Washington Ave G stop. Because they'd taken the time to document each and every mugging really well there were multiple witnesses and the case was easy to prosecute. You can't be frustrated with the police's response, what are they supposed to do? Some kid smashed your window and ran off. Even if the police drive by that block every half hour, it still wouldn't prevent it. And if any of you have one of those car alarms that doesn't shut off once it goes off, I'm the one that got you towed.
  • My brother's car was broken into yesterday night/this morning in the south stuy area about two houses down from where he lives. He is beyond pissed since it's his first car.
  • Sounds bad...
