  • After the New Year, the city picks them up off the streets.
    Check nyc.gov for details.
First Saturday of the New Year [usually] you can drag them up to Prospect Park's 3rd Street entrance where they are mulched, and you can grab a bag of it if you bring a bag to put it in.
  • From:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/recycling/holiday_tips.shtml#christmas-tree-recycling

Remove all lights, ornaments, stands, and plastic bags from your tree and bring it to a MulchFest location on Saturday and Sunday, January 5 & 6, 2008 from 10 am to 2 pm.

Bring your clean Christmas tree to designated sites, where it will be chipped into mulch. Bring a bag if you want to take away mulch for your own use. Go to mulching for more info on how to use mulch. NYC's recycling bin characters will be on hand at certain locations.

    Green-Wood Cemetery MulchFest in Brooklyn:
Drop off trees at Green-Wood Cemetery (5th Avenue & 25th Street Entrance) from 8am to 4:30pm daily from January 1 thru 11 and until 2pm on January 12. Get mulch year-round! From 10am to 2pm on Saturday, January 12, a tree chipper will be on site and the Master Composters from the Brooklyn Compost Project will be available to answer all your composting questions. NYC's recycling bin characters will also be on hand from 10am to noon for free Polaroid photos.

    DSNY Curbside Collection

santa on sanitation truckIf you miss MulchFest, the Department of Sanitation will collect clean Christmas trees left at the curb from Thursday, January 3 through Wednesday, January 16, 2008. Trees are chipped, mixed with fall leaves, and recycled into rich compost for NYC’s parks, community gardens, and residents like you!

Remember to remove all lights, ornaments, stands, and plastic bags from your tree before setting it out at the curb for collection. Trees that still have these items attached will be collected as trash.
  • I keep on waiting for that lightning bolt of inspiration that will make me wealthy. As in:

Phase 1: Collect used Christmas trees
    Phase 2: ...
    Phase 3: Profit
  • There's a mulch drop-off inside the the 3rd Street entrance to Prospect Park just off of PPW.

Where do you buy those big plastic bags that you can put the tree into??

Better to leave a trail of future compost as you drag the thing to 3rd St
although the city does pickups days specifically for trees, and they take it to the mulcher. nyc.gov, like dw said.
I love it when they dump that stuff on the paths in the park - it smells good.

If you're talking about a bag to take it out of the building, just wrap it in an old sheet until you're safely at the curb.

Indeed I am :D - maybe I can drag it the 2 blocks in the sheet also.
  • My family tradition is to trim the branches off and then cut the tree into logs and burn them next Christmas as a Yule Log.

I am a new dad who remembers throwing last year's christmas tree onto the fire fondly and will carry on the tradition. Maybe somebody here will also pick it up.
  • It's tree chipper weekend up at the park
if you can drag your tree up to 3rd St entrance

there's also free mulch available for a couple of weeks as a result
    :D
