The Ugly Methodist Parking Lot — Brooklynian

The Ugly Methodist Parking Lot

Has anyone ever raised a ruckus about the Methodist parking lot on 5th and 8th Avenue? It's hideous, and given how nice looking the one across the hospital looks, I'm surprised the neighbors haven't caused a stink.

Comments

  • What's so bad about it? All I see is a lot with cars in it-how much nicer could it be?
  • Lets close it and build a methadone clinic in the neighborhood,
    a true thing of beauty.
  • Subject: ok, ok

I'm not sayin' it's the worst thing ever, but the rusty chain-link fence, overgrown weeds, etc.....why can't it be maintained like the one across the street.

Or maybe I'm just mad I can't park there.
  • I think if the Methodist was called they would probably clean it up,give it a try.
  • Subject: Not Methodist Hospital Parking Lot on 5th Street

The parking lot on 5th Street and 8th Avenue is owned by the church on 4th Street. Methodist Hospital has nothing to do with that lot.

And while we're on the subject of parking and Methodist Hospital. . .

The rates were raised in their underground parking lot and now the workers can't afford to park there and use the streets surrounding the hospital which means less parking for residents.
  • the rates for the underground garage were raised last year-has there been another raise? My husband parks in that underground garage and we haven't heard anything about another raise.

And, i didn't realize you were originally talking about the lot at 5th Street and 8th Avenue-the one connected to the large apartment building there/ I didn't even realize that was a methodist lot-I was under the impression it was a privately owned lot.
  • It's not a Methodist Hospital parking lot. It is owned by the church on 8th Avenue and 4th St. Nothing to do with Methodist Hospital or the apartment building. There's a long waiting list and you have to know the priest or something to get in. On Sundays you have to move your car out for the parishoners to park for services.

Whatever the rates are in the underground parking lot, the hospital doesn't give the workers a good enough deal to make them not park on the street for free. This is a real problem for those of us living near the hospital. Nothing against the workers, I'd do the same if I worked there, but the hospital needs to be more responsible to its neighbors. Recently the hospital tried to make two sides of 6th street near 8th Avenue for hospital parking only and there was an uproar and they changed the signs the next day.
  • Don't worry, there are at least two dozen salivating developers with their eyes on every gas station and parking lot in the neighborhood, so as soon as someone dies or sells, that 'eyesore' thorn in your side on 5th and 8th (which has been there my entire life although, strangely, I've never looked or thought twice about it) will be some nice fresh condos that you can beam with pride over. :)
  • forgive me if this is out of line, but since when the hell does anyone care what the frig a parking lot looks like? i personally think they should bronze the fence on the school across the street from my building. grey is just sooooooooo not the color. ADELPHI STREET UPROAR GET INTO IT NEIGHBORS!
  • I would like brighter lights by it so its not a big dark spot on my walk home when I take the F train. Seems like a nice place to get mugged.

also they should open it up to the public, im sure people would pay to park there.

    :lol::lol::lol::lol:

    agree
    and
op should get facts b4 placing "blame" on incorrect owner.
  • op here...indeed, i should get my facts straight. I could've sworn I saw a sign indicating it was a doctor's lot, but evidently, I was incorrect.

But, having a rusty, overgrown eyesore in the middle of an otherwise attractive neighborhood seems a bit neglectful, regardless of who the owner is.
  • Rusty overgrown eyesore? gee, that seems an extreme description of a parking lot. I just love when newbies move in and want to sanitize the entire neighborhood

Having just come home via 4th ave I can't get with a parking lot as an eye sore.. what are eye sores to me?.. All those terrible looking buildings that are springing up on 4th Ave. Don't get me wrong.. I don't care if people move to Park Slope but why would they pay those inflated prices to live in buildings that are so ugly?

Give me some vacant lots and some parking lots rather than what passes as luxury condo buildings in PS!!
  • Herehere veets. Those buildings are just hideous and I have to walk by them almost daily to get to the subway.

I'm with you. I don't know who's designing this crap but they need a reality check.

Not to mention, who the hell wants to live on 4th Avenue? It's an ugly, dirty highway. 4th Ave used to be the place you lived if you absolutely couldn't afford to live anywhere else in Park Slope.

hence why i used to live on 4th ave  while there's lotsa stuff i miss about living around there, not having a 6 lane highway and a subway outside my bedroom window is pretty great. instead now i have a school, and im at work while the kids are in class. couldnt ask for a better situation :D

i agree that i wouldnt want to have to stare at it.
  • I guess many of you must be architects, artists, and designers... people much more conscious than I of graceful design.

I look at the new high-rise buildings on 4th Avenue not as ugly eyesores, but rather as a vast improvement over what preceded them... warehouses, car repair shops of various sorts and other equally tacky industrial and/or commercial sites.

No, I wouldn't want to live in them either, especially given the Fourth Avenue locations, but I still think Fourth Avenue looks better for their presence than it did before.
  • While the buildings might be better than warehouses and empty lots that were there before (in some places)-they are ugly. And, do not fit into the neighborhood at all. In some cases, smaller buildings were torn down to make room for them.

Oh, and car repair shops and gas stations are needed businesses!

i have to say, that given all the horrid development around here--like what happened to the parking lot on 15th street--i love walking by and seeing that lot on 8th ave. each time i see it i feel glad it hasn't been turned into something awful
