I passed that scene. It wasnt pretty. I've stalled at E.Pkwy and Rogers before and was shocked at how close people drive up to a stalled vehicle before slowing down or switching lanes. All cars should come equipped with reflective triangles or flares to place 20 ft behind the car in case of stalling out.

I swear that Eastern Parkway has got to be the Queens Boulevard of Brooklyn. I think you're taking your life in your hands if you cross against the light. I see people do it all the time, but I've never been brave enough to do that.
So I can imagine how dangerous stalling out on that street could be. -

Eastern Pkwy and Utica Ave is the most dangerous corner in BK for pedestrians.

Um, you just look both ways and cross if no cars are coming. I do it twice every day, more often against the light than with it. You have to keep in mind that if you see a car coming, it may be doing 80MPH and perhaps you should go ahead and wait for it to pass rather than try to get by in front of it. Of course I'm usually crossing at about 5:30am and 10:30pm, during more busy times you are pretty much waiting for the light, period.
The accident sounds pretty bad. It doesn't particularly surprise me, and I agree that Eastern Parkway often seems like a personal racetrack for driving school dropouts. Perhaps they should stick some of those new recruits along Eastern with radar guns and try to get it under control. -
There are many times I would rather cross against the light at EP and Washington than with it, especially when dealing with eastbound left turns off of Washington.
And agreed on the dropouts/burnouts dragging out there. It's only a matter of time before a very nasty incident occurs either with someone getting in/out of a car by the library (though the folks in the stopped vehicles would be equally at fault) or around the museum. It's not uncommon to see cars approaching what looks to be 70mph (or greater) in the stretch from the top of the hill by the Gardens to the light at EP and Franklin. -
Well, that's why I don't cross against the light, even late at night. Cars may look far away, but since they are usually traveling very fast, I usually don't think it's worth the risk.
It's because it's a wide boulevard. Traffic studies have been done which shows that people tend to speed on wide boulevards. In some cities, streets have been narrowed to calm traffic down.
