Have just moved into Park Slope and am desparately trying to find some good eggs benedict in the area (or relatively close by). Could someone please post some suggestions...

Thanks

  • Avoid the 5th ave diner on 5th between 8th and 9th I think.
If you want really good ones take a little trip to Tom's over on Washington and Sterling. So good. I may have to go soon myself now that it's on my mind! :)
  • You might want to try Cafe Luluc on Smith St. They have a really good eggs florentine. The sauce is very good. Maybe ask them if they would substitute ham for the spinach? It's an idea. PS Go there for pancakes which are to die for!
  • miriam, on fifth avenue and warren st., makes a fabulous eggs benedict.
  • try sotto voce on 7th and 4th. they got 4 types of benedict and unlimited brunch cocktails for like $12

I agree! We were there yesterday and the eggs were excellent. Extremely nice people too.
  • Mmmm. I live less than two blocks from Sotto Voce, but have never tried. Can't wait to now though :)
  • Went to Sotto Voce this weekend and after getting my tea and $7 bottle of Pelegrino, I asked for the check. This place is a mess. The woman next to us got the wrong dish, the couple next to us complained about the food, and the whole vibe was just way off. This restaurant has no idea who or what it is!
My husband and I got up and left. Its the kind of place you see on Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares!

Had great eggs florentine at Moutarde yesterday.
  • Phew! I was starting to think that hubby and I were the only people around who couldn't stand Sotto Voce. We have been there about 3 times and the food and service has always been terrible! We keep thinking it must be us because for the life of us, we cannot understand how they have stayed in business so long. There always seems to be a lot of people in there eating also-it just doesn't make sense!

    I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!
    This place is a joke!
Its so tacky! My husband could not get over the $7 bottle of Pellegrino. Not because he is cheap, but because it was so unbelievable!
This place is always packed for the same reason a lot of mediocre/bad places are packed. Most people just don't know the difference or just don't care too.
    This place is AWFUL!!!!!!!
  • I have to weigh in on the AWEFUL side as well. I have eaten there once in all these years and just don't get why the place is always crowded.
  • I feel so much better now, LOL! The reason hubby and I even went back so many times was due to the fact that it is always crowded and we kept thinking it must be us!

I hope you found good eggs benedict somewhere, not a huge fan, so, no suggestions.

I was completely unimpressed with sotto voce the times i've been there. I was there for brunch once and there was only ONE waitress so of course it took forever to receive food and drink. There were no unlimited Mimosas that day because the poor woman couldnt keep up with the demand!!

Obviously it was not the waitresses fault that everyone played hooky. but when that happens, a restaurant needs to pick up the pieces so that the dining experiences of everyone in the place suffers ie: Get EVERYONE who is not cooking on the floor, managers, whomever just to get through the shift.

The food wasn't all that in my opinion so with so many other places to try, I'll probably never go back there.
  • Sotto Voce has a much better brunch than Stone Park Cafe. Check out Chowhound for instance and or do a search on Google. Stone Park gets high ratings for dinner but not Brunch.

Not exactly true - Stone Park is well regarded for all the meals.
Anyway, I'm going to stick to my own actual experience and not Google hits - I'm pretty fed up with all the bitching and shilling you get on most restaurant listings sites.
So, Stone Park is where I go when I want Really Good Fancy Brunch. There's plenty of other really good choices - I imagine Cocotte or Belleville put out some nice eggs too, along with Miriam's, Moutarde ETC.
Rosewater is another place I'd try if I was looking for more high end brunch places, come to think of it.
Park Slope is stocked to the teeth with brunch. All you really need is a super orderly kitchen with good service to get the eggs out in a timely fashion. I'm sure there's others I don't know about on the South Slope end of things.

The place I actually miss is Aunt Sonia's, formerly on 8th Ave around 12th St.
They made heavenly nectarine scones . .

I think Sotto Voce must have a big attraction with the all-you-can-drink brunch cocktails, but I'm not looking for that. Those two places on Union St between 6th and 7th Aves also do the unlimited cocktail thing btw.

The next place I'm aiming to try is ICI in Ft Greene. I had a great dinner there not too long ago. They are French with the fresh local organic thing going on, so I have high hopes. :D
  • just for the heck of it, these are the top two results on chowhound if you google "park slope brunch"

Izzy's, Stone Park, Applewood, Rosewater, Cocotte, Miriam in no particular order
FYI Beso is closed, and Palo Santo stopped making brunch.
  • Wow - someone needs to PM me about Stone Park - I am sooo curious.

Anyway, been to Sotto Voce 3 times and they are offically on my NO list. All three times the food was terrible. Brunch twice - both times really bad - no matter how many free drinks I have, I will neve be able to stomache bad eggs florintine. The dinner we had there...well, it basically tasted like watery flour. No kidding. The tomato sauce tasted like ketchup. Blech. Of course me and my b/f were convinced it must be just us because people rave about that place! Seems like you either LOVE or HATE this place.

Speaking of brunch I MISS BESO!!!!!! They were the best. Sigh.

I recommend Moutard, Sette, 2nd Street Cafe (I miss the old decor but the food is pretty good!) - yeah those are our 3 main stays.
  • Brooklyn Petal
I think we should let it go so no ones gets "IN TROUBLE"
    let's stay focused and positive
I can rant in anger about Sotto Voce for a good long time and I was only there once. I cant believe you went back 3 times! That is commitment Petal!
  • I don't judge a restaurant on just 1 bad experience. What can I say - I'm a trooper.

Man - I am so excited for this weekend - after reading this thread, I totally want some eggs and yummmmy holendaise sauce.

Oh - I forgot - to balance out my negativity (slapping myself on the wrist) I will write a POSITIVE comment about Magnolia. Went there for the First time New Year's Morning and not only was my eggs flortentine totally yummy and my b/f's fritada very tastey, the waiter was SOOOOO AWESOME! He was just totally great! We expected a hung over crap shoot for a waiter going anywhere after New Years but this guy was on it; cracking jokes; greating everyone; very nice and super attentive. I send them BIG Kudos and they are now, officially on my list :-) YAY LIST!
  • what's magnolia?
    do tell
  • Oh so yummy - take note their Florentine has a light olive oil sauce and not holendaise which I know we all love..but it is really yummy!

It is located on 6th Ave and 12th Street (I believe) and their menu seems really good. We popped in on a whim and will be going back for dinner in the near future.

I did a quick Google and found this...

I mean, if they were this good January 1st...well I can only Imagine!
  • OH TOTAL CUTENESS
    MUST TRY IT
  • I believe it has something to do w/creepy crawleys.

Magnolia? Another word for Magnolia is Olive Garden. Go across the street to Bar Toto for a better meal. A very long wait at Bar Toto though. Took over 30 minutes for a salad, to share before our main course which was another 15 min.

Same w/Sette. Not worth the extremely long wait. Food was sub par. Check out reviews on chowhound as well. After the original cook left it went downhill.
  • I don't see the connection between Olive Garden (blech!) and magnolia at all-we haven't eaten at magnolia in quite a while-but used to love it when we did . I love the decor too.

As for Bar Toto, hubby is still upset that they changed from their original name and menu (found it, they used to be called Luce).

We used to go in there and he would get these great tiny meatballs with pasta that he loved and I don't believe they do that anymore. He has never forgiven them!

I love Bar Toto for a daytime outdoor drink during the summer, but I've never had brunch there.
  • Oh - Bar Toto is good! I never went there when it was Luce so I have nothing to compare it to - prolly makes it easier. Plus, as a vegitarian, I don't usually miss meatballs :-)

I gotta say though, been to Sette for Brunch, lunch and dinner. They have always been good. I have only had to wait a couple of times - and those were times where it was really nice out and pretty much anywhere you go you would have to wait. I also find the waitstaff to be very informed about their menu, cuisine and usually pretty attentive.

Sorry you had not such great experiences there - I guess that goes back te me not ilking Sote Voce and other Loving it...

i was talking about Sotto Voce-I have never been to the other place.
  • Subject: Blue Ribbon versus Al Di La: Smackdown

"Livetotravel" wrote: Stone Park is yet another example of the expanded dining options in Brooklyn in general and on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope in particular. It keeps company with Blue Ribbon and Al di Là and can hold its head high among them."
Gotta say, Blue Ribbon is really not very memorable. Blue Ribbon Sushi is very good but Blue Ribbon, besides the oysters is just overpriced and the menu is bland. Went twice and the second time I realized that the first time was not just a bad night after all. I think Al di Lá has a creative menu--whether you like it or not. I don't love everything on it but think the atmosphere and most things are pretty good and not something I can easily repeat at home. I guess I am saying that I don't think Blue Ribbon and Al di La are on Par. Blue Ribbon reminds me of Legal Seafood in Boston.
  • I personally LOVE eggs benedict. I make them at home for special events or for breakfast. Sometimes I use hot sauce, other times I don't.

I'd suggest going to Lindo's over on 5th ave b/t 17 and Prospect Exp.

They don't actually "serve" eggs benedict, but if you slip them a five-spot sometimes their minds change. Other times they just think it's gratuity.

    Welcome to the neighborhood.

MOD NOTE: discussion of Stone Park and their threats of litigation over unfavorable comments has been split off to its own thread here.

  • I thought EB at 2nd street cafe was decent. Beso had the best, but they are no longer around....
