Brokers/Agencies in PS for rentals?

We're on the prowl and not sure we can find what we want through craigslist. Any information about agencies or specific brokers in the area would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • I used William at Doral on Prospect and 7th......... but I found him through his ads on CL.
  • we used dwayne powell @ heights berkeley
    917 309 2414
office is on 7th and berkeley
    he was awesome!
  • John Burke (Sr.) on 7th Ave. near 14th Street. Long-time resident, knows the area well (especially Windsor Terrace) and will not try to piss on your head and tell you it's raining
  • A lot of people don't like Berman Realty, (I am sure there is a thread on them) but they rent their own apartments so there is no fee. Probably worth a look.
  • A place we really wanted just became available through Alta. They guy helping us has been pretty nice. Anyone used them before?

Dont use him. He stole $500 from my mom after she changed her mind about renting an apt from him. He also propositioned her for sex when he found out she was single, and he also touched my arm a few times when i was looking for apartments with him alone.

Not to mention, he rang my bell a few times to ask for keys to the front door so he could show the apt without asking my landlord first.

    He's a real bastard.

Wow. I'm quite surprised. I used him 10 years ago when I moved here and he was the ONLY one who didn't waste my time and yet had good apartments. Everybody knew him and said hello when we went around town.

I was working with him again for my new move 10 months ago until I found a place through another connection.

I know a lot of people who have known and worked with him for many years
  • Subject: DORAL IS GREAT HONEST AND HELPFUL

I'm not too surprised. We used him... nothing amazing to comment on. But he was good. My main complaint: He tried to charge my wife and I $250 EACH for background checks. We almost walked out then just for the point of trying to charge such an outrageous amount TWICE (you know it must only cost them $10 to do the checks). Needless to say, he only charged us $250 for both of us.
  • 250 bucks for what?

35 for a credit check was exensive for me and thats all I needed to pay when I rented my place.
  • When my boyfriend and I paid our broker (Brian @ Brown Harris Stevens, Montague St. location) for credit checks a couple of weeks ago, he only charged us $16 each.
  • Now that I think of it, I don't think it was a "background check" but rather an "application fee." Whatever, we didn't have to pay a broker fee... so we were alright with it. But still, it was bs.
  • I've used Rita Knox Realty over the years in listing the apt.s I have for rent. I have found them to be professional and polite. Their rental agent Bruce Grant has always been very straight with our office in our dealings with him.
You may want to try the small local neighborhood brokers rather than Corcoran or BHS.
  • Well then, an application fee is a totally different thing . . . It's whatever the broker/management company/landlord can snow you into coughing up: if you're naive or desperate for the place, you do, if you have other options you say "no thanks" and move on.
  • Try Royal Slope Realty.... 8th street bewteen 5th and 6th... perhaps not great for very center Slope but a real find for the rest of PS and surrounding areas... Ask to speak with Micael Schaum..
(sorry don't have number handy right now)..

If you are interested and lazy pm me and I will give you the number.
  • Sari at Fillmore on 5th and 11th was really great to deal with when I rented there. Really knows the neighborhood well to and didn't BS us about the building.
  • We had luck with Mary at Brooklyn Real when we moved from the UWS.
    www.brooklyn-real.com
She seemed to know the 'hood pretty well, and we're happy with our place.
