recent mugging incidents in park slope

edited November -1 in Park Slope
Hello,

My wife, daughters and I have been Park Slopers for several years and are
dedicated to the neighborhood and the community.

My wife was mugged around 8pm on New Year's Day on 8th Ave and 2nd Street by
two hooded men. They followed her, held her and grabbed her purse. She was
physically unharmed, but very upset and feels deeply violated. It was very
traumatic for our daughters to see their mother as upset as she was.

The police responded quickly and during the investigation said that this
has been going on regularly in the neighborhood. It has happened several
times in the last week and the M.O. is always the same. Two or three men
with hoods pulled way over their faces or scarves covering them, sometimes
with knives, after dark, looming in the shadows - especially on 8th Ave or
PPW. They have chosen their location, they have decided on a method and most
disturbingly they have picked their victim: women walking by themselves
after dark.

I wondered if you could help inform the community about this to help avoid
any more women being mugged and violated in this neighborhood so loved for
it's safety and civility. In print, on line and/or as e-mail, anything and
everything that spreads the word in the community would be a help.

I hope we can count on your support.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!

  • sorry that it happen to your wife. i hope she feels better eventually.

i always thought the "prime" blocks of ps are too darkly lit. and very few people seem to walk around the richer areas.

In general I feel more home owners in the area should have their front lights turn on. with all those trees making the area even more dark.
  • Subject: I'm sorry

After I got mugged (under similar circumstances except that a knife was involved), I went to an excellent self defense program for women held here: http://www.cae-bklyn.org/sd.html. It helped me a great deal. I also sent my daughter to a program there for teenagers.
  • I am so sorry this happened to your family.
  • Truly unsettling - I hope your family is coping. What's equally unsettling is that my wife and I live on that corner - I have just recently seen two people in the early evening that fit that rather general and amorphous description. Thanks for posting - I'll be sure to inform my wife.
  • Yikes, that's terrifying. So sorry to hear what your wife and girls have gone through!

I work a second shift and usually don't get home until after midnight (my office pays for a cab if I leave after 1am, though) so I'll absolutely be keeping my eyes peeled.
  • Here's an update from one of the women who was mugged, as posted in Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn's blog.
This just in from a woman who was mugged on Sunday night. The good news is that one of the muggers was caught on Sunday night in the Park. I want to say THANKS to the woman who took the time to write this post as a way to warn women in the neighborhood. She's been through a lot and still feels violated, frightened and vulnerable. THANK YOU.

I was mugged on my way home Sunday night at around 10:30. From what I’ve heard from neighbors, this has been going on for the past week or so.

I had passed these two kids when I was walking home from the 2 subway at Grand Army Plaza . They must have doubled back, and followed me – I saw them on the other side of the street about 20 feet behind me, but since there were plenty of people around, I felt ok, but very cautious. I turned down my block, and when I turned around, saw that they were following me. All I could think of was I needed to get to my door as soon as possible. I took my keys and my cell phone out of my bag. They came up on my stoop, I heard them and turned around, and then they backed me up against my door, pulled on my coat, telling me to give them the bag.

All I could think of was that they were going to drag me somewhere. The smaller of the two grabbed my bag, and they both ran into the park. I started screaming for people to help me, my downstairs neighbor and one of my other neighbors ran into the park after them, and a bunch of other people came out. My roommate and this other woman called the cops. I really appreciate all my neighbors and what they did for me. The cops came right away, asked me to get in the car, and we were going to drive into the park to see if I could identify them if found.

They ended up catching one of the kids in the park, but the other one got away. They had also dumped my bag and all its contents on a playground. He took my debit and credit card, my leather gloves, and my camera.

Although they didn't hurt me, I still feel violated. Although they got one of them, I'm still scared.

I have had the satisfaction of identifying one of them. The cops had him in handcuffs near the playground, and asked me if that was one of them, I looked at his face, and immediately knew it was him. He denied it, of course, but the cop told me that when they got him, he had obviously been running, he was pretty winded. It was pretty satisfying knowing that I could identify him, say, "yes, that's one of them" and that hopefully he'll be put away.

He was the one that had me against my door and was in my face, but I don't know if I could recognize the other one. I read up last night on sentencing for this type of crime (I couldn't sleep), and since the kid has priors, he could actually go to jail for anywhere between 2 and 25 years depending on what classification felony it is.

The ADA called me Monday morning, and told me that the kid had given up his buddy, and the cops were now out looking for him so that they could arrest him. He also told me that since they took my credit cards, it's a felony. I have to go to the grand jury on Friday. Detectives stopped by last night, and I’ll have to go to a line-up sometime this week to identify the other one, if I can.

Hopefully, these two are the ones who have been mugging other woman in the neighborhood and that there aren’t more of them out there. If this has happened to you recently, you should call the officer on your case, and tell them that you heard that someone had been arrested for a similar crime.

    SWEET JUSTICE
  • Thanks for the update. Gee, I'm surprised they're a repeat offender. Not. Now they need to put the bastards away for a very long time.
  • I've read people complain about New York cops on Brooklynian.com, but the few times I needed cops in crime situations they helped me. Once they even caught the criminal and put him in jail.

If anyone is mugged and lives to talk about it, they should file a police report to help prevent others from being victims.
  • I was happy to read that the outcome of this mugging is 2 criminals that hopefully will serve some jail time... especially since there was a felony commintted. No jumping up and down on that one yet because we know how the criminal justice system works. The quick response of the friends and neighbors and the police is what we all hope for. Sometimes it doesn't go down that way. In this case it did. One Hooray!

Be careful my friends... watch your back... and be safe.

I was mugged, I reported it. They didn't appear to be particularly interested - I even gave them the license plate number of the getaway car - but they did take the report.
  • just fyi, Gowanus Lounge reports that the case is still open, and even though some people have been arrested for muggings, they are not necessarily the serial muggers. so, be careful (like always).
  • Vote Republican so we can finally carry guns without bribing public officials or being well connected.

It is a supreme hypocrisy that the only people who get carry permits besides a few security guards are diamond merchants, liberal media types, and democratic politicians.

There is no reason why there should be street crime. In a free country, a well armed populace deters all such crime.
  • not according to the data...

well, i'm sold. problem solved!

Right - that is why there is no crime in Texas.
  • mr. met wrote: not according to the data...
Do you have a link to back that up?
  • well, what data shows that a "well-armed populace" deters street crime? where has this worked? do you also believe that the death penalty deters criminals?

i do know that, if a family keeps a gun in their home, they are more likely to do themselves harm than hurt an intruder. i don't have data handy, but i think this is a well-known fact.

Google is your friend. Took me about five seconds to type in the keywords family + "gun in home" and find this:

    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CE2DD1239F934A35753C1A965958260
New York Times wrote: Instead of increasing protection, a handgun in a home almost triples the chances that someone will be killed there, a study of homicides in three metropolitan areas has found.
While this backs up what mr. met was saying, I still have to suggest that if y'all are going to throw out stuff about "the data" and statistics, you might want to be prepared to take a moment to back what you're saying up. "I read it somewhere" or "It's a well-known fact" are NOT valid argument points.

Since this is something I feel strongly about, here is a very informative site
    http://www.bradycampaign.org/facts/factsheets/

A gun kept in the home is 22 times more likely to be used in an unintentional shooting (4 times), a
criminal assault or homicide (7 times), or an attempted or completed suicide (11 times) than to be used to
injure or kill in self-defense. (Kellermann, AL et al., "Injuries and Deaths Due to Firearms in the Home." The Journal of
Trauma, Infection, and Critical Care, Vol. 45, No. 2, August 1998.)

In 2004, 1,804 children and teenagers were murdered in gun homicides, 846 committed
suicide with guns, and 143 died in unintentional shootings. A total of 2,852 young people
were killed by firearms in the U.S., one every three hours. (WISQARS, Injury Mortality Reports, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control,
Centers for Disease Control, 2004 data,
    http://webapp.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/mortrate10_sy.html (hereafter Injury Mortality
    Reports)

"The firearm injury epidemic, due largely to handgun injuries, is 10 times larger than the
polio epidemic of the first half of this century." (Christoffel, Katherine Kaufer, "Handguns and the Environments of Children", Children's
    Environments, 12(1), 1995, p. 42.)

And while we are at it toy guns are dangerous for children:

  • thanks, apollonia and stacey.

in the future, ill do my best to back up my blanket statements with data.

for the record, i was right.
  • I tried to post this @ OTBKB but it wont post -

while it is great that the women mugged Sunday night helped the police catch one of the perpetrators, she is seriously risking the case by sending her accounts (i.e. written statements) to bloggers who are now posting them. Her detailed description of the crime and especially the identification of the (now) defendant may be used against her if this case should find its way to trial.

If the women is reading this or someone who knows her is reading this - IMMEDIALTLY provide these written accounts to the ADA so that he/she is prepared to address them and PLEASE stop writing these accounts while the criminal process is ongoing.

HUH??? She did not mention any names and it is the victim not the ADA talking on the blogs. There is no gag order in effect. When this goes to trial the judge asks the potential jurors "do you have any personal knowledge of this case". I am sure they can find enough jurors who did not read this to sit on that jury. Also this type of posting does not constitute a written statement - a written statement is dated and signed with the person's "real" name and usually witnessed and/or notarized.
  • I wish they have those carry conceal gun laws. everytime i ever been mugged i saw it coming. If i had a conceal gun hell i'll shoot where they stand.

While we're on the subject of backing up data, could we get benzapp to maybe back up his claims that "the only people who get carry permits are diamond merchants, liberal media types, and democratic politicians"? Because that sounds like a somewhat spurious -- and incorrect -- claim right there.
  • yea, that claim makes no sense.

    Bad link?
I think it was a joke? Because before he was asked to back up his statements with data? Maybe not. But if it was, it made me laugh...
  • yes, joke. :)

I made no comment that a "well-armed populace" deters crime. Also there was no discussion of the death penalty nor family and guns in the home. I asked you for a link for the "data" that you say disproves benzapp's comment: "There is no reason why there should be street crime. In a free country, a well armed populace deters all such crime."

If ya can't back up what you say then either say so or don't say anything.
