960 Sterling Pl — Brooklynian

960 Sterling Pl

I recently looked at an apartment for sale at 960 Sterling Pl (Sterling & New York). I don't know a lot about CH & wonder if anyone has info regarding that building specifically & the blocks surrounding it.

thanks.

  • We live on St Johns b/w Nostrand and New York. We moved in May of this year and have been very happy. Most of our neighbors have been very welcoming and the commute is so much better than two places we almost bought in Bed-Stuy. Only things we really miss are a good coffee shop and wine bar that serves some light food... and don't anyone say anything mean about that...The neighborhood could use a wine bar and I don't mean at the exclusion of the other shops, or that we should yuppify the whole neighborhood. Just one wine bar within walking distance that serves some food.
  • We moved to Sterling b/w Nostrand and New York this summer and we love it. For the most part the neighbors have been friendly and welcoming. Nostrand has the basics, Brooklyn style groceries, laundry places, 99 cent stores etc.. Transportation is good as there are subways on Eastern Parkway and on Fulton St at Nostrand for both. New York has the bus to the Home Depot in Bed Stuy -- very important.

People get hung up on the issue of safety/crime in this area but I have never felt unsafe. That apartment would have a quick, well lighted walk from the Nostrand 3 station.

The drag is that you kind of have to leave the neighborhood for most types of nightlife and restaurants. There are some but not quite the variety as a Park Slope or Williamsburg.

For the time being you may be better off trying to get one of the handful of sit-down places to start stocking more wines. Ask and see.

Has anyone else seen/considered/moved into the building?

You should try Tavern on Nostrand (Nostrand and Union) and across the street Bagels and High Tea for coffee, etc. Also on Fulton between Bedford and Rogers there is a really cute spot called BushBaby's. It's an all organic coffee bar. Owners are sweethearts. They always have a very chill atmosphere going on in there. Great brunch on the weekends.
