What's the deal with the house that's being torn down on this block / closer to Underhill.

It was one of my most favorite houses in the hood...

Torn down? Which one? I know one of the ones with the porches is undergoing a gut renovation, but demolition?
  • I used to live two houses over, and I walk by the construction every day - I was wondering when someone would comment on it here.

There was a bit of an disapproval aired by the block association when the permit was issued, but I haven't heard anything lately. If I remember correctly, they're going to be adding a few floors - it'll either be 4 or 5 stories when complete. In any event it will be the tallest building on the block.

It's the one with the pink (salmon?) pillars. They put up scaffolding around the bottom of the second floor and have removed all but the shell of the first level.

So it's not being torn down then? :?
  • A while back, I received an email with a link to the building permit, but I can't seem to find it now - I must have deleted it. I guess that at this point, I can only be certain about the height - that seemed to be the main issue with the neighbors. I thought that they were simply adding a few levels, so when I saw them knocking down the 2nd floor walls, it was a bit of a shock. I don't think that they're going to completely rebuild, and I could be wrong, but the fact that they built such a sturdy wooden platform around the top of the first floor seems to indicate that they wanted to protect the lower level...

I'll dig a little and see what I can find.
  • I had my camera with me on the way to work today -

  • They keep removing more and more of the house - the front wall and porch is essentially all that's left.
  • That is really too bad. There is a house with similar architecture next door and I really found them to be quite charming .
  • Here's the old post on that, from a year ago. Sad to see the photo of how it used to look.

Anyone taking bets on how "classy" the new addition will be?
  • My understanding is that this "renovation" will basically involve deconstructing 99% of the house and creating a new apartment bldg on the site built out to use every square inch of available FAR (floor area ratio). It's being done as of right so can't really be resisted by concerned neighbors. A tragedy for what had until now been an entirely intact 19th century/early 20th century block. Look out for more of this in the neighborhood as speculators continue to move in. Speaking of which, the new building to replace the old burlap factory on Bergen St -- across from the playgrounds -- is going up at a ferocious rate, and it's built right up to the sidewalk.
  • Ugh, that IS a tragedy. I walk by that (formerly charming) building every morning on my way to the subway. I'd noticed that it seemed to be empty, and until this construction project began, I'd been wondering why no one lived there, whether it was for sale, what the interior was like, etc., and fantasizing about how great it would be to own such a lovely place. Very sorry to learn what's planned for it.

Strictly an investment opportunity by a person on the north shore of LI, judging by the town's financial demographics...
