Chicken Wing Bones — Brooklynian

Chicken Wing Bones

Anybody else getting disgusted with the increase in chicken wing bones scattered on our streets?

Not only is it really gross, it's also dangerous to our dogs! On multiple occasions in the past few weeks, I have had to pull a bone out of the dogs mouth. Some people have no respect for their neighborhood and the saftey of our four legged friends!

  • I've actually seen a lot less now that CFC on WA has closed down -
  • i'm also disgusted by the amount of dog feces not picked up by dog owners..

Not only is it really gross, it's also dangerous to our humans! On multiple occasions in the past few weeks, I have had to jump/step out of the way of some dog turd. Some people have no respect for their neighborhood and the cleanliness of our two legged friends shoes!

sorry, but i think dog shit is a lot more of a problem than chicken bones..
  • I noticed a bunch of bones on my way to the subway on Park Place today. Yuck. I don't get why someone can't just carry the bone to the trash can on the corner. The dog shit thing is gross, too, but I feel the bones are even less defensible, because at some point you were happy to carry the bone in your hand, so why not transport it twenty extra feet? I shudder to think of the feast the bones present to rats.
  • yeah i hate dog tard. i get them in my tree pit on all the homes :(. i step on a few too :(.
  • ltjbukem, I'm interested to know what your comment has to do with the abundance of chicken bones on the street.

For the first 2 and a half years I had my younger dog Ripley, we lived in PS. Ripley was always a pig but she only occasionally searched for food on the street. After we moved to CH her behavior on walks changed drastically. She must have thought she was in heaven with all the bones and random crap on the ground. After 3-4 months I had to get a basket muzzle for her. Our walks consist of Ripley with her nose to the ground searching for a morsel of food or a delicious bone. She doesn't stop and sniff anymore, she's like a bloodhound searching for a missing hiker. I couldn't keep my eye on her every second because I have another dog and nothing I did made her stop. She was a stray so she was used to scavenging for food.

The chicken bones on the street are as bad as all the other garbage. In CH we're lucky there are stray cats otherwise we'd be overrun with rats.

At least no-one has cut a hole in your roof and dropped turds down!

I also live in CH, and my minpin acts the same way. We go on "bone patrol", not regular walks. I'm convinced many of the bones come from street cats breaking into plastic garbage bags at night.

by cats you mean humans who walk on twos and after finishing meals throwing them on the floor :p.
  • it's a snarky reply to dog owners who are so afraid of bones for their dogs, but yet think nothing of not curbing their dogs for humans.

sorry if you always curb your dog but those who don't just give all dog owners a bad name.

i'm already a dog - disliker so flame me.
  • dog crap and chicken bones on the ground are both gross. i can't even walk down bedford b/w bergen and st. marks because of all the turds -- literally one every two steps. and the chicken bones are not on the street because cats take them out of the trash. i've seen people walking around with boxes of chicken throwing bones over their shoulders. if it's any consolation, this isn't only a brooklyn problem -- i came from harlem and it was the same deal there.
  • I do agree that people have become lazy with the leaves in picking up dog turds. This is totally not fair to the dogs, people are just being lazy.

The sidewalks around Grand Army Plaza are particularly bad. I wonder what will happen once the money dogs move into the neighborhood over at One Grand Army Plaza. I can't see these people pulling a wing bone out of muffy's mouth..
  • Shhh people. Remember what happened to the last guy who posted on chicken bones .... he was never seen again.....

 I've said too much already!

Increase?? Good lord, you shoulda seen it 10 years ago. There's way less bones now.

I agree that it is gross, and disrespectful to the entire neighborhood. I don't understand why people have to litter when there are trash cans on almost every corner. But I guess they have no pride in or respect for where they live.

It just makes me nuts since I always clean up after my dogs. I don't understand the people who leave their dog's crap on the street. They live in the neighborhood, why would they want it to look disgusting? And it never fails that I'm the one who steps in it!
  • I HATE litter of all sorts. Tossing your food remains anywhere other than a garbage can or a compost heap is totally uncivilized and inexcusable!!

Re the dog doo: that is the WORST after it rains. UGh.
  • at least the rain washes it away.
  • I've noticed a decent uptick in dog crappings on the sidewalk in my area. Nothing like Williamsburg the last time I was up there, it was like a war zone, land mines everywhere. Chicken bones seem to be holding steady. I'm not a fan of either, but given the option I will take chicken bones over dog crappings. FWIW.
  • mr. met wrote: at least the rain washes it away.
Not really. I find that after it rains, its just a wet mushy blob that gets smeared across the width of the sidewalk.
  • People drop chicken bones as they eat them, while walking. Or they dump a pile right next to the bench they were sitting on, even when there is a trash can within arm's reach. It's just piggy.

But about derailing this thread with dog poop...why, WHY do so many of the threads on this board feature poop? Is this site overpopulated with adolescent boys?? Enough already, people. I really don't want to hear your lovingly detailed description of your experience of the stuff. There must be special message boards out there on the internet devoted especially to poop-o-philes where you can post your eloquent poop experiences. Spare us!

    Which one is yours? :P
  • Both the poo and the bones are nasty. They're a result of laziness. I have a dog - a very large dog who makes very large poo - and I always pick it up. I also always have to yank him away from chicken bones. Although, I have noticed a decline since the warmer weather left us. I seem to notice more in the summer. The higher the temp, the more bones.

There's some impressive shit on that there site...
  • If only the gross people that throw their chicken wing bones on the sidewalk stepped in doggy pooh...
  • I understand some people don't have time to sit and eat at home. That they have to "Eat and Run". But it always amazes me to see some A-hole littering the streets with bones. Walking with his little container of chicken wings from some deli or chinese takeout. Munching them down and tossing the bones behind him like some @#$%-up modern day "Johnny Apple-Seed".

If chicken bones could grow chickens from where they have landed,
we'd all be up to our neck in hens!

I lived in Astoria for 15 years. Never saw a local throwing Gyros as they walked through the neighborhood.

Is this a cultural issue? NO!

It's people with a real lack of class.
  • what's a good wing place in the neighborhood? i promise i won't throw the bones on the street.
  • "The Islands" on Washington Ave and Eastern Parkway next to the "Key-food".

    REALLY, REALLY GOOD CHICKEN.
