bed stuy question — Brooklynian

bed stuy question

Hey guys, my name's Jade. I was just browsing through Brownstoner.com for the past hour or so, and I read all about the crime increase in Brooklyn in the past year. Bed Stuy was one of the areas, and I was just wondering if anyone could shed a little light on the area on Bedford Avenue between Myrtle and Willoughby, crime-wise. I know it looks pretty boring and it's not the most beautiful street, but how is it, crime wise? I just rented a room on that street, used to live on 16th in South Slope where I could come home at 3am by subway without a problem. Thanks.

    why did you leave?
  • ..............anyone?
  • It might take a few days for someone who's familiar with that specific block to respond.

    just fyi.
  • There are people that come home at 3am almost every day and the majority of them don't get robbed, raped or killed. YMMV.
  • Before you decide, I'd check out the earlier thread about the racoons, little f***ers, they have those cute little bandit masks so they think they can away with anything.....

    Hello Jade...

I own and live on Greene avenue between Patchen avenue and Broadway
which is considered North Stuy i like to refer to it as Stuy-Wick being that
broadway is the border of Bushwick. Okay to answer your question is there crime in Bed-Stuy yes, Bed-Stuy is big enough to have parts that are not the greatest and parts that are, I always tell people that are interested in moving here walk around and check out the different neighborhoods are better yet talk to people who actually live here not people on Brownstoner because they tend to be biased and at times racist. But my husband and I
have lived here for three years and we have never experienced a robbery or a mugging, now I have heard a couple of gun shots but i have never been attacked. The police 81 precinct is about two blocks away on Rallph avenue
and they are putting more cops on the street which I love!! Bed-Stuy is wonderful and some parts are going through some drastic changes, but as you know anywhere you live you still have to be cautious of your surroundings.
  • This is an old thread, so I'm not sure if you're still checking, but I live off of Bedford between Myrtle and Willoughby, and it's really pretty safe. Bedford is such a busy street. I wouldn't recommend taking the G train past 1am during the week at the Myrtle-Willoughby stop, but the Bedford-Nostrand stop is pretty safe. During the weekend there are tons of people on the train, even at 2am. I've lived here for over a year and I'm a woman. There have been a couple of times when I've felt unsafe. I couldn't tell you why, sometimes you just get a bad vibe from people. But in general, I keep my head up and look people in the eye, especially if I feel like they might try to bother me. If I really feel like they might bother me, I cross the street.

I love Bed-Stuy (and it's only Bed-Stuy by a couple of blocks). People are so much friendlier in this neighborhood. I used to live in Park Slope and it was killing me with its snobbery.
  • To be honest, I'm a bit tired of seeing these " is this street safe" posts. Hello people, this is Brooklyn. Crime can happen anywhere at anytime, especially in New York, and often times we make the assumption that just because there's a cute coffeeshop that sells 8 dollar arugula sandwiches around the corner, the neighborhood is 'safe'. No amount of gentrification or new money is going to drive out the inevitability of crime. Do I let this stop me? No way, I love this city and all it has to offer, and I think the riskiness factor is a small price to pay for living in such a great place. Just be careful and aware and don't become so starry eyed that you loose sight of the purse that was just snatched from your shoulder.
  • To the above poster... I know things can happen anywhere. I'm not stupid, haha. I was just wondering, from people who've lived around the area, what it was like... as I said, I used to come home late on the R train in South Slope and never had a problem. Then I read Bed-Stuy had crime increases in the past year and I wanted to know if anyone had any incidents, especially coming home late at night. That is all.

I've lived here (Bedford between Myrtle and Willoughby) for about 3 weeks now, have come home at 3 or 4am on the G, got off at Bedford-Nostrand... haven't had a problem yet.

    Thanks for everyone's input.
  • I know this is a tangent on an old thread, but I couldn't help but bust with a little self-defense wisdom.

It's important to keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings. But looking someone who seems threatening in the eye is counterproductive. It's an escalator. If someone has violent intent, then looking them in the eye is a clear "bring it on" kind of communication.

Better to look past or through someone who is skeeving you by looking at their forehead or neck. This kind of look clearly communicates "I see you," but without adding anything else.
