  • Why would you tip? A tip is for good service-you are picking up the food-I see no reason for tipping. I mean, in a restaurant, you don't go in the back and tip the cook-right?
  • I pick up a lot of stuff and I don't tip. For those that do, who do you direct the tip to, the person who took the order or the person who rang up the sale?

For the record, when I pick up stuff at the local diner, I've never seen other people picking up tip either, unless it's just to put the coin change (no bills) into the tip jar on the counter.
  • Ok, just wasn't sure what others do. I myself don't tip when picking up except my local sushi joint, where I tip the gentlemen that prepare my food.
  • i don't tip for pick-up. what's the standard rate for delivery?
  • Yes, always when the cashier slips a joint into my bag.
  • I would say the average tip for delivery is 10-15%. if the weather is shitty I always tip very generously.
  • I usually tip 20% and have my son steal his bike :P
  • I'm actually starting to miss Restless Native.
  • I always tip the delivery guy--more if it's raining. When picking up....well I already got slammed for this one; saying how Bagel Hole doesn't have a tip jar--and they prepare sandwiches. Some bodegas have a separate tip jar for the sandwich guy, and I wonder if I put the money in ahead of time, will that equal more avocado?.....And if I don't tip will they put special sauce on it next time? :?

Its been awhile since I did that kind of work - but I seriously dont think that the average delivery tip is 15% of the bill - I think it is more like $3 (no matter the bill)
  • Subject: Tip if a waiter takes your take out order

If a waiter takes my order, I tip for pick up. The reason is that if the waiter is made to take the order, that is reported as income to the government and the waiter must pay taxes on the imaginary tip (thank you Ronald Reagan for this little law). If a counter person or host or owner has taken my order, I don't tip. But I would never tip 15%. I tip a couple bucks.
  • I certainly do. Considerably less than I would for table service but someone took my order, bagged it, etc. Usually just a dollar or two but having been a waitperson I know that it is work and it does take time.
  • I almost never tip if I pick up the food with one exception..Yayo on 9th st bet 5th and 6th.. because the guy who works their front counter gets tips if people eat at the counter but it is also his job to prepare all those take out orders. It has been the same guy for years and I can tell you that most times I don't wait very long if I wjust walk in and order to bring it home. He sees me.. knows I will tip him.. and I do get bumped to the top of the orders.

GIVE ME A BREAK. The guys at Video Forum on 7th Avenue near Carroll Street do more work than that. If we're going to tip every schmuck who stuffs our Pad Thai into bags, we might as well tip our video clerks for recommending films and putting our money into their cash registers.
  • No, it is more work than video clerks do. Usually considerably more. And the order gets taken, taken to the kitchen, etc. Like I said I do tip less, but I don't see why they shouldn't be tipped for that work when it does in fact slow one down and add to the work one's doing especially when one is busy. When it was busy take-out orders were a big PIA as I always made sure to put it in a plastic bag too, with napkins, utensils, all that. And I usually got a dollar or so. I thought it was standard. I am surprised at the number of people who don't tip for picking up.
