Historic District in North Crown Heights

Folks, I can't believe somebody hasn't commented on this: the Landmarks Presveration Commission had a hearing almost two weeks ago about creating the largest landmark district in 10 years in NYC. 452 houses. It went well I'm told by those who attended.

Anyone live in the effected area, which is all of Dean Street between Bedford and Kingston and pieces of Pacific, Bergen and St. Marks near Brooklyn Avenue?

Any thoughts on how the proposed district will impact your property?

    Yes, I was at the hearing and the response was generally positive, tough this report seems to highlight those in the neighborhood who oppose the district.

    I think it is a great thing for the neighborhood, especially in light of the cheap or otherwise out-of-context development seen in Brooklyn's brownstone neighborhoods in the recent years.

    MOre recently, last Tuesday, a group of folks testified at a LPC hearing to have 1375 Dean Street declared a landmark building. A developer had filed for a demo permit in September. Check out this building, between Brooklyn and Kingston. It dates to the 1850's when this whole area was farmland. It has a big porch and is set back on a hill from the street. Interestingly it turns out the owner was a real estate broker!!

    I agree with you Greg. It's surprising that this topic was not discussed earlier. I am ecstatic about the LPC finally recognizing this beautiful neighborhood. My house is located in the first Phase I and I think it's about time.

    I know many homeowner fee that they shouldn't be told what kind of window or lighting they should choose, but I look at it as our community being protected. As an example, there was a great farmhouse on Bergen bet. New York and Brooklyn Avenues which was razed to build new construction and that's a disservice to our community. I'm all for historic designation!!!

    I just moved to Dean St., just east of Kingston, so I guess I'm on the cusp of this phase? Though I'm just a lowly renter (a subletter at that!), I am still very interested in what LPC decides to do with this district. Truly, this area has some of the most stunning architecture I've ever seen.

    Subject: 1375 Dean

    The building at 1375 Dean (George & Susan Eakins House) was constructed between 1854 and 1865 when the area -- then the town of Bedford -- was still rural, and is the only remaining freestanding single-family wood frame house in this area.

    Looks like it needs some TLC though...

    From what I know, Phase II included aditional areas to the south of Dean/Bergen Street, but north of Eatern Parkway that were not included in Phase I. You could probably call someone at Landmarks or CHNA to get a general idea... these things are often gerrymandered during the process.

    Better yet, come to the next Crown Heights North Assn. meeting at St. Gregory the Great (no relation to yours trully) RC School, at the corner of St. Johns Place and Brooklyn Avenue. Wed. OCtober 18 at 7:00. The HDC people will be in the house, you can ask your questions directly.

    Oops. HDC stands for Historic District Council They assist communities in getting landmark status and are experts on the process.

    the proposed area up for designation at landmarks is the phase 1. Phase 2 is much larger and to the south of phase 1.

    the next CHNA meeting will be devoted mainly to a question & answer session between homeowners in Phase I and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Commissioner Tierney & select members of his staff will be in attendance to answer questions. Representatives from the various funding arms will also be there, at St Gregory's- St Johns Pl & Bkn Av -
