  • I assume he did the math and figured out it was to his advantage to fill it with private events until Jan.

...private events can be very profitable, and also are a great way to show off a new space to a clientele.

For those not aware, that is tomorrow! For those not aware, the website has been updated and is pretty snazzy

  • Finally! Though I could have sworn one of the initial menus posted here had more food offerings than their current site now shows. Maybe it'll expand as they ramp up?
  • Oh, and no brunch hours yet? *sigh*

An event for Friends and Family of the owners was held last night. A friend and I attended, and had a really good time. The finishes are very nice, good music, high quality wine and beers. Professional grade sound system. I no longer have the Way Station as my only choice for live music ....I can now be much more sophisticated:The band pictured will there all weekend.

Additional acts listed on the website.

    Enjoy.
  • I had dinner at The Classon last night. I was impressed. Good food, nice ambiance, and professional service. There was a jazz band playing in the corner which. A major improvement over Abigails! A great date place. I hope they decide to open for brunch in the future.
  • I did as well. I hadn't realized it was going to be a jazz club. At first I felt a little out of place; I was expecting a more typical dinner/beer joint. But the food was great and the live jazz very cool. I hope it does well... the area could use a cool jazz club.

Italy and Louisiana intersect at a Crown Heights jazz bar. The Italian-born Brooklyn chef behind Vanderbilt Avenue's Amorina Pizza has opened an Italy-infused soul food restaurant with live music.

    Hey! He stole my line.
  • And now Brownstoner weighs in: http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2014/02/classon-social-club-brings-blues-jazz-and-comfort-food-to-crown-heights/
The Classon Social Club opened its doors last Friday on the corner of St. Johns and Classon, offering live blues and jazz and classic American comfort food. The bar and restaurant serves up homey dishes like mac and cheese, chicken pot pie, shrimp and polenta and sorghum glazed porchetta. The western Crown Heights joint has a small stage outfitted with a drum kit and piano, and there are several blues, tango and jazz acts lined up for later this month.
They have a decent photo of the interior.
  • We went Thursday night and loved it. I had the chicken pot pie and a Stone Levitation Ale. My wife had the sliders, which were good but a little drier than I like em. So happy this exists.

The owner seems to be positioning The Classon as being a "live music venue with food", as opposed to a "restaurant with live music".

The distinction is crucial. Those not attending (?!) the Winter 2014 Brooklyian Happy Hour, might enjoy this event:

  • As a result of being a live music venue, he is targeting media specializes in same:

He might not primarily go after the crowd that looks for weekend activities in The Village Voice.
  • Did The Classon close?
  • It certainly is open far fewer hours than other venues.

Once the Court Officers Academy opens, he will hopefully have the foot traffic necessary to stay open longer hours.

  • The lights are on.  They windows were papered over a bit ago with a sign saying a renovation was in progress.

I really hope the court officers school drives traffic.  I think this is a great place and would hate to see it close.  Though in its present state, it doesnt seem like the type of venue that would attract court officers.

On a side note, the owner's other places seem to struggle.  Amorina has been closed during the days for a while now.  And he shut down his other place across from Amorina.  Owning a restaurant seems like a stressful life.

He seems to be going for an older group then other live music venues in the area, such as Way Station.

Being 46, I like it better than the Way Station, but am well aware that folks in their 40s don't go out as often, or spend as much as we did between age 22 - 35.

One of the few plus sides is that an operator doesn't need to spend much $ on security.

The lost revenue doesn't seem to be made up for with such savings.
  • For sale:

Cool place and good food, but a terrible location for an expensive restaurant.  Basically no foot traffic in that area.

Approx one year after its grand opening in Feb 2014.

The owner (who I regard as a friend) was aware that the area had little foot traffic, and his hope was that the live music would attract people from some distance.

Unlike many of the new upscale restaurants, this owner did not purchase the entire building. This was in part because the building is much larger than many others. Instead, the first floor and basement was purchased as a condo, which comes with some sort of time limited lease instead of common charges.

(The intricacies of which I am not completely clear on. Is the lease an additional cost? Does the condo assn have the option of terminating your lease at the end of it?)

To break even, the owner needs to recoup his investment of approx $675k, along with the improvements he put into the space: http://nostrandpark.com/2010/01/27/abigails-cafe-and-wine-bar-is-for-sale/

As per Corcoran, he seeks $849k. Until he gets it, he is on the hook for however much the lease is (aka common charges?) plus payments on that mortgage.

I'm not sure if he will continue to maintain his present limited hours in the interim.

Events do still occur. This event seems much different than the live jazz music that had been often featured.

I wonder if this new daycare is affiliated with the adjacent one on St. Johns, PKA Academy.
