my cat is anti-social, but i bought her a heating pad and now she sleeps next to me on the bed on top of it. she's not an under-the-covers kind of girl.
  • nice one, I can't imagine a cat that could resist a heating pad :)
  • Hey cold people. I don't do this but some friends of mine have. There is this plasticy stuff you can get at the hardware store to seal your windows. You apply it with a blow dryer, and it should improve your apartment's heat retention. I'm sure someone on the board knows whatever it's called and will reply to this post.

It works wonderfully, even in MN winters, but I've had trouble finding it in NY stores.

    i know.

i always have a heating pad going when i'm reading or watching tv because my back gets wonky from sitting over the potter's wheel all day. only every time i used to get up (bathroom, food, etc.) my cat would walk over to it and lie down. i'd come back, move her, and she'd scream, get snotty.

only took me ten years to realize that if i got her her own heating pad everyone would be happy.
  • our heat came on this evening. i heard clanking and then that familiar radiator smell.

cat is still on heating pad, sleeping upside down, dreaming about something that's making her lick her lips in her sleep.
  • It's colder than a witch's tit in a brass brassiere doing pushups in the snow in my apartment today. I've got on my flannel jammies and the oven's on. Brrr!

So, I'm guessing you have no heat.

My landlord and I had a very heated discussion yesterday (because ALL of the discussions with him start out with him screaming.....that's the reason why I'm not going to be living here next year when my lease is up) and he said he's not putting it on until the 15th no matter how cold it gets.

I live in a private brownstone so the LAW doesn't cover me. Does anybody know what options I have regarding getting him to turn in on. I'm not looking for suggestions re: space heaters, cats, boyfriends, window sealants, etc. Just want to know if anybody has ever dealt with this in an apartment that's not covered by the multiple-family unit laws.

In the end I may just have to bundle up for a week because fighting with him may not be worth the hassle, but I'd like to know what the options are
  • um... maybe you know something i don't, but the law doesn't say it's Oct. 15th; the law says it's Oct. 1st:

check this link out to Acticle 8 of the Housing Maintenance Code (this includes "every multiple dwelling and every tenant-occupied one or two-family dwelling"):

    http://www.housingnyc.com/html/resources/hmc/sub2/art8.html

    this is what it states:
"a. During the period from October first through May thirty-first, centrally supplied heat, in any dwelling in which such heat is required to be provided, shall be furnished so as to maintain, in every portion of such dwelling used or occupied for living purposes:
    1. between the hours of six a. m. and ten p. m., a temperature of at least sixty-eight degrees Fahrenheit whenever the outside temperature falls below fifty-five degrees; and
    2. between the hours of ten p. m. and six a. m., a temperature of at least fifty-five degrees Fahrenheit whenever the outside temperature falls below forty degrees.
    b. During the period from October first through May thirty-first, all central heating systems required under this article shall be maintained free of any device which shall cause or which is capable of causing an otherwise operable central heating system to become incapable of providing the minimum requirements of heat or hot water as required by this article for any period of time. This subdivision shall not apply to any safety device required by law, or by a rule or regulation of any city agency, to be used in conjunction with a central heating system.

    good luck.
  • wow, that's different from what I saw. Thank you!

The one I saw said multiple-unit dwelling. I called 311 and they confirmed it. (I had been using this: http://www.oag.state.ny.us/realestate/tenants_rights_guide.html)

Yesterday my landlord (who lives downstairs in our 2 family brownstone) was screaming and quite intimidating.

I just left him a note saying that I called 311 (anonymously) to verify the law and that it does cover this building as of Oct.1 and that they suggested I have an inspector out here and that he can be fined for every day that he doesn't comply.

I went on to say that I would not do that as we are two rational adults who should be able to discuss things and work them out amongst ourselves and with that in mind, please turn on the thermostat.

Seriously......THESE are the times that I wish I was with somebody. I'm self-sufficient, etc. but when you have a 6 foot + lunatic screaming at you and living downstairs from you and you are alone.....it's intimidating.

Anybody wanna come stay over and look imposing :?:
  • p.s. Shishakob - I saw a woman walking a dog that looked like your avatar today on 16th St. Woman was wearing a pink and white hoodie. You?

nope. i've got two dogs and walk 'em together :D

hope that jerk of a landlord does the right thing, and hope you warm up soon!
  • Thank you!

I've been online....Googling...on the phone with 311, etc. He's been really threatening/intimidating, doesn't give a shit about the law, making repairs, etc.

It's really uncomfortable, but I also won't be victimized because I think he's pulling crap knowing that I'm single, live alone, etc.
  • this isn't advice, really, because i don't exactly think it's altogether legal but...

when i had problems with my landlord not making repairs to my apartment in a timely fashion, this is what i'd do: after speaking with him and giving him enough time to do the work, if he reneged i would place a notarized letter with my rent check telling him that i intended to hire someone to do the work he was supposed to if he did not complete the work within 10 business days. when i didn't hear from him (i never did), i'd hire someone to do the work and deduct it from the following month's rent. i'd send a copy of the receipt along with the reduced rent check. he would bitch and moan, and i told him the only way he'd recoup that rent from me was in court, at which time i told him i thought the judge would be interested to hear the story as to why i had to hire someone in the first place. it worked every time. actually, it worked so well that this was how i ended up conducting most of the repairs to my apartment.

two caveats (hence why i think this solution may not work for you): 1) i doubt this is legal; 2) my landlord didn't live in the building.
  • I'm happy to report that after 2 weeks of construction in my house (he's upgrading to copper pipes....still another 2 days or so of interrupted water to come next week), I finally have heat as of 9pm.

Lots and lots of beautiful heat
  • i try to turn on the heat in my building didnt work. i call my contractor he says he is gonna turn it on for me tomorrow morning :p. but inside the building it says 68 F
  • Inside my building it was down to about 63-64 before the heat came on.
  • right now it's 66 and i'm under a blanket with the cat and a heating pad.
  • damn ladies, i dont even turn on the heat for myself :p till it drops below 40 lol. and than i dont like heat.
  • armchair_warrior wrote: damn ladies, i dont even turn on the heat for myself :p till it drops below 40 lol. and than i dont like heat.
i am glad you are not my landlord.

i love heat. this is bullshit. and my coop president, who is nowhere to be found, has the thermostat in his apartment.
  • That sucks, BP, I hope that gets resolved soon...

  • I don't have heat yet and it's definitely under 60 degrees, but I"'m not so sure if I want to wake up to the sound of the banging pipes at 5am every morning either... I think it can wait a week.
