    While I love the photo, it does not provide an answer to what I have always wondered:   

    "Why does Lincoln Place jut at Washington Avenue?"

    ....I like my blocks to be straight and in line with the previous versions of them.

    This isn't the full answer to your question, but I have a 19th century map of brooklyn (pre-museum, post-prospect park) and the area around Lincoln and Washington was different: the roads WERE all straight, "Lincoln" was still "degraw" there, eastern pkway was "park", AND...there was a traffic circle where Washington and ep are today. My guess: in order to make room for the museum, the builders had to get rid of the circle, which set off a chain of events and led to the jutting.

    Cool to see these old pics. In today's pic of this same location that damn illegal clothing drop box bin would be in the lower right hand corner!

    ribbons, I think you are thinking of the box by the vacant lot on St. John's.

    I'm not aware of one on ultra crowded Lincoln
