Who needs a bookstore? — Brooklynian

Who needs a bookstore?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I'm going to open a literary bookstore in Brooklyn. Somewhere. Someday soon. It's gonna have all the newest and best hand-picked stuff, some kids books, comic books/graphic literature, and if I can I get enough space for a cafe, some killer events too. I've been exploring neighborhoods for months, looking for the right combination of cheap rent and educated folks with disposable income to make a place like this work.

So what do you think? Where do you think there's the greatest demand for a great literary bookstore? I posed the question on the Prospect Heights board and got lots of ideas. I know the Slope has several stores on 7th Avenue, but I'm wondering about the South Slope, or even down toward Gowanus. Where do you think a bookstore could survive and thrive?

  • Scroll down a bit and there's a thread called "Babbo Bookstore", which is opening on PPW.

I love independent bookstores, but I don't know how any of them survive without being able to compete with the discounts that the big chains offer.

    Best of luck to you.
  • south slope is a good idea, since the used bookstore now moved down to 1st street. i think the further up 7th ave you go, the better.
also - in the area closer to the park, bordering windsor terrace, there is no bookstore, as far as i know. and if it is true that lesbians are moving out of the slope and over there, you have potencial buyers.

it will be very hard to survive, with B&N, two used bookstores and the community bookstore on 7th ave.
but we always need new bookstores!
    good luck.

We are STARVED for a bookstore in Windsor Terrace/Kensington. The neighborhood has changed A LOT this past five years--lots of young singles as well families who really want a book store HERE. The rents are still affordable and you will have a monopoly. If you join KWTNeighbors list serve you will get a lot of help finding a cheap good location. (we have people working on community development here!)
