Public vs. Private Preschools
Thousands more free seats will become available this year through de Blasio's universal pre-K plan. Private preschool programs will get hit as parents jump ship.
Private nursery schools are preparing for big changes thanks to the city's universal pre-K plan.

Hmm. The Maple Street school is an extremely tiny pre k. I think they have 3 classrooms. Not sure how much I buy the article, especially for schools much larger than this. We'll see what happens. I teach at a private pre k. It will certainly be a case by case basis

Not to be obvious, but the parents would have to believe that the public PreK school offered services that were "almost as good" as the privately funded ones.Cheaper options are presently available to parents of kids attending private pre-Ks, but they choose to spend the money for many reasons....

Agreed. Economically, the people looking at private pre k are different than people seeking public. We have a small percentage of families on financial aid. Maybe those families will consider the free option, but for everyone else who can afford the private school and money is not an issue, I don't see them going anywhere. And as someone who has taught in both public and private institutions, I personally will be staying put as well.

The preschool teachers I know, are willing to work for private entities for lower salaries than they would accept from publicly funded ones.
Hence, I view this effort as increasing the number of slots available to low income folks, whom presently rely on lic'd and unlic'd daycares located throughout the city.
Many middle class people might not understand the distinction daycares and preschools. ....they haven't had to choose between them. -
BTW, the deadline for UPK applications for next school year is in a few weeks, April 23rd:10012827_10151973722632411_5091301451020032620_o.jpg
