Bed-Stuy YMCA — Brooklynian

Bed-Stuy YMCA

Anyone go? I found out its 5 minutes from my house and I've been looking for a gym to join but theres nothing in the area and everything near work (downtown) is $90+ a month. I'm going to go check it out sometime this week but I wanted to see if anyone had an opinion....?

  • I was a member there about five years ago. At the time, it was great because it was a couple minutes from home and was always pretty empty when I went (evenings and saturday mornings to swim). My biggest complaint was that the locker rooms were pretty bad. So much so that I wore my suit there under sweats and would pull them back on and go home to shower and change.

They are in the midst of a renovation and its been a couple of years so I'm hoping the place gets a good face lift. The staff was always really nice, and the place had a bunch of teenagers that worked/hung out there that were always willing to help you out. Nice small gym feel.
  • I was called by someone at the gym months ago. They informed me they were cancelling my membership b/c the building space was being converted to apartments (my guess is condos). This was a while ago; maybe a year now. At the moment they still offer short-term housing for low-income tenants but the gym is done, I think.
  • That's sad. Another landmark from my youth being taken over by
    real estate developers
  • last month ymca waive the initiation fee, so it'd be 150$ cheaper

and if you worked at LICH, it would be 44$/month (vs 55$ usual)
    @the dodge ymca

line was too long for the cardio machines even @3pm on the weekday...
i was surprised there were so many teens there already
  • Subject: YMCA not YWCA

Chefsgirl, I thik you ae mistaking the YWCA on Atlantic & 3rd Ave with the new Dodge YMCA on Atlantic & Court. There is also the Bed Stuy Y which is also undergoing a renovation.
  • I sure was! Thanks for clarifying.
  • Looks like there will be fitness facilities in the new building eventually...

  • Subject: Dodge Y

I don't know about the Bed-Stuy Y but I belong to the Dodge Y in Brooklyn Heights - I take the bus from Clinton Hill to BH in the morning and then go from there to work - and other than the smallish locker room, I have zero complaints.
  • Does anyone have any idea how much a membership costs? I had been thinking about joining, but my old Y (on 14th St in Manhattan) was not cheap.
  • Subject: Y Costs

I'm not sure about the Bed-Stuy, but the Dodge costs ~$55/month and I think Bed Stuy is a bit cheaper

I go to the Dodge too. It's pretty good. No complaints for only $50 a month. My girlfriend gets a $35 student price.
  • Wonderful. Thanks so much. Way more afforable than the last one I lived nearby.
