Local Gym
OK so I have read up on this topic here on this forum, but obviously everyone has a different opinion. I'm thinking of joining Body Reserve- mainly because of proximity; it's very close to me. It also seems like the most cost effective gym in the area, from my research when you get a one year membership-three payments of $299- about $600 a year, which is only $50 a month. I also did the one day trial and it didn't seem very crowded during the after work hours, which is good for me.

Body reserve is a meathead gym. It's the cheapest, but there is a reason for it.
You have to decide for yourself how you want to be treated. -
what do you mean by meathead gym? I mean obviously I've heard the term, but it's so general. And when you say decide how you want to be treated, do you mean by the other constituants at the gym or the owners or what? Can you give any examples...
I'm mostly only interested in running on the treadmills there and maybe some free weights... -
you're best bet is to do what you did, try a place, check the price and most importantly, make sure it's close to where you live or easily accessable. More people stop going becuase it's not convienent than because they think their gym might have meatheads, which, by the way, is soooo 1980s. Most gyms in and around the city have such a huge mix of people you can't say one attracts more meat heads. Be leary of people telling you otherwise, there are a lot of gym trolls on this board that are bound to attack any gym but their own (you should be able to figure out what I'm talking about pretty easily).
But seriously, if you like body reserve and its close to you and not too expensive, do it! Best thing to do is get there and have a nice workout! -
I'd recommend the Park Slope Y. The people who work there seem genuinely happy to be there, and most of the employees also teach classes. Other commercial gyms I've been to seem to have a kind of sad, underpaid indifferent workforce.
The Y is cheapest of all too - only about $50 per month. -
Subject: YMCA
The Y on 9th Street is great - it's actually under $40/month if you qualify for several easy discounts (mine is b/c I'm a Coop member) but some are for working at certain corps., etc. Check it out.
I like it! -

Does meathead infer that there are no frills, and you get your money's worth?

The term meathead refers to a gym full of bodybuilders and a guido attitude.

Further if a person likes one gym over another, then what is the harm in advocating it?
Kosher dave you spent alot of time ragging on about a gym on another site.
So it's o.k. to rag on a place, but not o.k. to recommend a place?
Has the area fallen so low as that? -
On another site? Or on another thread on this board? 'Cause I've not been on another site mentioning gyms that I know of. And also, go read what I wrote, tell me how much ragging I did. I think I mentioned 2 things I did not like about one or two gyms, like the price of sign up fee or something... it was a while ago but I was ripped into by the GM and several "guests" or something who mysteriously appeared after my comments and, like you, did not bother to become a member (I suspect you're one of them), just trolled the board to hark on other people's opinions. Actually, to hark on MINE only, despite LOTS of people having similar opinions.

Weird, I had an opinion to share but was shot down for it.
Plus I did not say you could not recomend a gym but could rag on one. You seem to be the person ragging on me the most. Guess I personally offended you somehow.
On this thread, I said "your best bet is to do what you did, try a place, check the price and most importantly, make sure it's close to where you live or easily accessable." Now, how is that ragging or even recommending, that could qualify for ANY gym. You really need to read what I write in a little more detail.
Also, nice of you to use racial/ethnic slurs. Guess you don't like Italians at the gyms you go to.
Why don't you join this forum instead of trolling. -
I must say that after reading the other "local gyms" thread on this forum, I not only decided to avoid Slope Fitness (which, admittedly, I probably wouldn't have joined anyway, since I live in PH), I also convinced two gym-hunting friends in PS to avoid it. The person who eventually identified himself as the GM just sounded way too hostile and weird, and I have seen way too many posts here (in that thread and others) that were obviously written by SF shills pretending to be random satisfied customersâ€â€NOT a good tactic for attracting new clients to your establishment.

i though the term "guido" had fallen out of favor
and that "goombah" was the preferred term now

hahaha, good point!
It makes me imagine a gym with all the people from the Sopranos working out. If there was such a place, I'd go just to be entertained. In all honesty, I've never been bothered by "meatheads" in a gym, seems like there will be some no matter where you go (maybe not at Lucille or Curves or whatever the women-only gyms are) but I've actually never seen very many, so it's all good.
The way I see it, if the place is clean and not outrageous in price and sign-up fees, and you'll actually GO instead of wasting your money, then do it. Best thing to do is to get out there and get the sweat on, burn the calories and then head to hagen daaz or out for some Guinness!

I think of Guido as more a classic 80' term that can be ressurected whenever you see fit. Especially if someone is wearing those god awfull work out pants that are baggy with the velcro front. -

Unless you're Jesse Jackson, I think you need to use Heeb... -
I second (or third?) the 9th Street Y. It's a pretty low-key, unfabulous mix of locals -- you won't feel like you need to dress up for it or be judged by anybody for your average body, etc. They've added a lot of machines in the past few years, tho (as at pretty much any gym I've been to), the elliptical trainers fill up first. I pretty much do cardio machines with *very* little strength training so I can't really judge the weight equipment but it's been fine for me.
All I really care about is can I use the machine I want, and is it cheap and non disgusting. The Y fits the bill. I've never got the idea of choosing or rejecting a gym on the basis of the other people who work out there. What do I care? I don't go there to socialize, and when I'm working out, as far as I'm concerned other people don't exist. Not even the good-looking ones. -

This is exactly what I mean. You are stating that people who like the place are shills and not real people. But if you bad mouth a place, that makes you real.
JJB you don't even live in PS.
It could be said that you are a shill for bad mouthing the place.
HOW MUCH DID THEY PAY YOU?? :x
