St John's Park, near Schenectady Ave
I'm hearing that St. John's Park may be closed next summer (2015) for renovations.
Closures such as this have multiple effects, some intended some not.
Dare we discuss the effects of closing a park that serves a pretty low income population?
Will the basketball courts disappear?
What will they be replaced by?

@whynot_31, would the Rec Center also be closed?
-
I do not believe so.
I think this will be confined to landscaping and bathrooms.
In other neighborhoods I have witnessed such rehabs; The work is done by contractors and goes months without any activity. Powerful entities (NYPD, Parks Dept, politicians) seem to regard the closure as a blessing.
When one thinks about it, the rec center's users are different than the park's....

The park is the site of the only 90 foot baseball diamond in this part of Brooklyn that is under the control of the parks department (all the others are NYC Board of Ed facilities), and is used on a pretty regular basis by U18 (13-18 years old) teams that play in the area as well as by a bunch of local adult softball leagues. I hope that there is some provision to address their needs because field space is tight in this part of town.

I hope so as well.
At this point, I know they are not issuing permits for large events next summer, and that the restrooms will be affected by the work.
However I do not know which other areas will be affected, or if this will result in the not affected areas being off limits as a result of there being no bathroom.
The teams may want to approach the Parks Dept to see if your fears are founded, and to see if renting a few porta potties would do the trick.
The Parks Dept likely regards organized teams highly. -
Well, if the Rec Center is going to remain open, there is a possibility that there will be no impact as they have full facilities inside.

They were putting up fencing yesterday. I was told that reconstruction on the game table area behind the rec center would start this summer.
