So many Crown Heights agendas in 25 minutes!

If you are going to watch this short, recent film on Crown Heights, make sure you watch the whole thing.
...longterm readers of Brooklynian will "know" all 4 of the guests.
They all know yours truly.
I'm kinda disappointed the phrase "epic drama" wasn't used.
...and am so amused at those who think that the past will (or should) dictate the future, or that some kind of reverence will be given.

Cool video. The subtitles on the guy at 1:03 were kind of unfortunate though...

So zoning is THE issue according to Richard Hurley? Interesting... And one that I don't understand.

I last wrote about Mr. Hurley on June 3rd on this thread:

He believes clearly locals should have far more control than we presently do.
...he clearly believes locals should have far more control that I believe we SHOULD.

It feels so rare to see a piece done about Crown Heights, where all of the video and interviews were done on either Kingston Ave or on St. Marks Ave. It was really nice to see a spotlight put on some of our local businesses and neighbors. Most days of the week I exchange pleasantries with Kelvin, and I've never once found him difficult to understand, so I'm also not really sure why they felt the need to add in those rather obnoxious subtitles.

I assume it is because the producers felt some viewers would have trouble understanding him.
(Did they expect to have viewers tune in from Topeka, KS?)
BTW, here's the official guest list:
Alan James (Save Our Streets, Crown Heights)
Rabbi Beryl Epstein (The Chassidic Discovery Welcome Center)
Rachel Holliday Smith (DNA Info)
and Richard Hurley (Crown Heights Community Council)
The producers write: "Join us in this special Crown Heights Roundtable to discuss the pressing issues facing Crown Heights today in the height of its rapid expansion."
To which I respond: While we may be in the height of Crown Heights' expansion between Washington and Kingston, the area between Kingston and Ralph may be just beginning to feel it.
No one is sure how big this change will be. -

But why is zoning THE issue that causes "contention between the blacks and the Jews?" And, assuming this is indeed cause for contention, he didn't explain why it causes contention? Seems like he is pushing his agenda you mention - more control for the locals.

...he clearly believes locals should have far more control that I believe we SHOULD.Zoning, to me, seems like a bigger issue than "blacks and Jews." Besides, the Jewish community is pretty much only in southeast CH, and the up-zoning discussion is not restricted to that area.I 'd bet that when "blacks" and a "Jews" pass each other on the street of CH, ninety nine out of a hundred times, zoning is NOT on their minds. -
agreed.
You may not be aware he was one of several candidates that competed for the 35th Dist City Council seat. He lost to Laurie Cumbo:

Clearly, he has his eyes set on some other seat in the future....
