Always interesting to see how people perceive the same thing. MPP is a park I've visited and average of 2x a day for the last 5 years.
As we've learned over the years, those of us across the street from MPP are in a different precinct. The precinct responsible for MPP doesn't care about our neighborhood. In fact, these are the people who issue cheap "sound permits" for MPP and allow private parties to blast music and noise for hours during the warm weather months. The city manager in charge of MPP has asked the cops to stop the permits (he gets all the angry phone calls) and the precinct has refused to act.
In terms of safety issues in MPP (robberies, gang activity, drug sales, mentally ill people), their response has been poor. When you call the precinct to ask for help, you get a "F you" sort of answer. One cop told me that they were responsible for a high crime area and MPP is at the bottom of their priorities. His advice about the safety issues? Just stay out of the park.
If there was a problem at an MPP dog run, I'm afraid we'll get the same attitude from the precinct.
It hosts the Panamian day events, and the occasional religious event. Yummy food with live music. Cops ensure that no one brings in alcohol.
...never had a concern in the park. -
Hi there!!
I still did not get any news from Senator Eric Adams but I guess he is still working on that, I will follow-up with him and will let you guys know.
And although moving to the country might be a solution for some people (well, maybe just one person) I prefer to look for solutions instead of just "escaping" so as EVERYBODY can enjoy the park (parents, kids, dog owners, dogs), which is a SMARTER option. Making changes for good is part of our responsibility as citizens, so let's be responsible and let's try to improve the services provided, do not settle for something that is not good enough.
And, please, nobody should judge if my dog is happier here in the city of in the country. I have a backyard and my dog wants to stay inside with me!. Nobody should say what is better for my dog the same way I do not say what is better for somebody's kids.
Thank for sharing your opinion, though, I just think that there are other ways to say the same thing :-) -
BTW, I ALWAYS clean after my dog, like many other dog owners. To be honest, the big problem in MPP (and Eatern Parkway) is not dog's poop, but ALL that plastic bottles, cans, chicken bones, dirty diapers, etc etc that I found every Monday. I guess those people should move to the country, too. Or you should just accept it, huh? It is just DISGUSTING, but I don't like to generalize since I guess there are many responsible parents out there, it would be very unfair.

why the nay-saying? this will be an *addition* to the available legal options and not take away from the other legal options for dogplay. as for the not-legal options...i disagree with those who allow dogs offleash where it is not expressly permitted. it's inconsiderate to human and canine, alike. some people are afraid of dogs. and leashed dogs who are approached by unleashed dogs, unexpectedly, often have bad reactions, due to the inequities. my large, energetic, active-breed dog and i will much enjoy this, should it come to pass. she is not yet trustworthy enough to let loose in the park and she really loves to play. please keep us posted, christina!

MPP used to be one of the most dangerous areas in Prospect Heights so it has gotten a lot safer in recent years. But the comment about the local precinct is absolutely true.
But those of us who live blocks away from MPP really despise the Panamanian Day event because the sound system is earsplittingly loud: we think they should hold these events at places which don't border high-density residential areas. Sorry - you can keep the "yummy food." -
...we disagree.
I'll have a plate of food with loud music a few times a year ...I live across the street. -
any updates on this? my canine and i are eager with anticipation

Subject: What's happening with the Mount Prospect Dog Run?
I see the petition is now approaching 200, but I don't see any posts regarding this for over a year now.
Anyone know the status? -
I don't have a dog but a gang of kids in MPP last year decided that it would be fun to throw rocks and shaving cream at my friend as I was walking her on the sidewalk between the Museum and GAP. They had terrible aim and missed, so we ignored them and kept moving, but it didn't make me want to hang out in the park. Like some other people said, the prank/violence issues up there might need to be addressed. Funny how it's between all this stuff but kind of like a mini dead zone.

Has anyone heard any updates about this? I go to Manhattan dog runs now, but I'd love someplace local to take her. There are 220 signatures now, so if nothing has been approved yet I'd love to volunteer to help with this one, or perhaps another location if MPP isn't possible for some reason, so please feel free to contact me.

I guess I should assume that this topic is dead, but I just got a dog and would love to have a dog run closer than the Old Stone House. Does anyone know what happened to this petition?

Hi everyone!
I would love to start this up again and make it happen! Please contact me.

Thanks!

Hi Ciarra!
I would very much like to be included in any efforts to get a fenced-in dog-run up at Mt. Prospect Park.
Please keep me updated.
Thanks!
All the best,
Kerry

I would also support your effort. I live b/w Classon and Grand so the 4th avenue dog run is a pretty long walk for me. Our little guy is a rescue who gets spooked by certain loud noises and likes to chase after pigeons. I wouldn't be comfortable letting him off lease anywhere w/o an enclosure.V

I would also love to know more about this and where the petition went! We also just adopted a small Havanese.
Unrelated, I'm also looking for someone in Prospect Heights/Crown Heights who is interested in a dog-walking/sitting swap, any ideas where I can find folks who would be interested in that?
Thanks!

Hi, all! Not sure who may still be checking this thread; however... If you take your dog(s) to run around up at Mt. Prospect Park, join the Mount Prospect Park Dogs Facebook group! We use the group page to share information and update one another about the goings-on up in the park. It's also the best place to start having real conversations about improving the safety of all of the dogs who use the space. Also, we have a monthly Yappy Hour, where we get together to have drinks at one of the local bars! So, come join our FB group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/mtprospectdogs/

I am sure you can count on Eric Adams. Animal lover. He attends our fundraisers for kitty cats and i read he became a vegan.
