Oh. My. God. That is the rambling of someone who is not well.
She may not actually be unwell. As speculated by others, she may be merely acting in a way that causes others to follow her.

If they are correct, she is merely a NIMBY, but one who is smart enough to enlist the help of useful idiots.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Useful_idiot

    http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Useful idiot

BTW, I am aware that the phrase "useful idiot" is usually used by the right to describe their left opponents. Please note that I believe Useful Idiots exist on both sides of the political spectrum.

...and, in this instance, we have a group that can't be easily categorized as left or right.

  • NIMBY or agent provocateur?
  • I'll agree that she may not actually be unwell. But not knowing her at all, and only knowing about her conduct at the meeting and then reading the above email, that would be my first conclusion. She is definitely charismatic, though, I'll give her that.
  • MTOPP might effectively mute CB9 for the next few months, and provide free political theater for those interested.

It would not surprise me if we get an opposing petition to show that MTOPP is not "the people" or "the community", it is just a vocal portion.

Meanwhile, the nieghborhood changes (gentrification) that MTOPP blames on CB9 will continue.

And, while they may be able to keep Empire Blvd zoned commercial, they won't be able to stop those businesses from serving the area's emerging means and preferences.

    ...businesses that don't adapt, fail.
  • Brooklyn Brief updated their article (see now) now that this video has gotten out.  Again - I know some people here disagree with me - but Pearl should NOT have done this no matter how provoked.  MTOPP baited her and she played into it - this is what they wanted and now the video is going out.  I have seen it in 4 different places in the last 6 hours.......

  • Does anyone else feel as if we are being asked to take sides re: a drunken subway car brawl?

  • @whynot_31 YES - I do - and honestly I can't choose because the way I feel isn't represented by either faction....I fear for us and for our community
  • Remember, even the CBs in NYC that are harmonious don't have a lot of power as a result of said harmony.

Power stems from a variety of sources. It often resides outside of the CB, and merely correlates with harmony.

    ...and homogeneity.
  • is there a Brooklynian meet up coming up soon?  I'd love to meet the folks who post to this board in person.

@mugofmead111 has been tricked into hosting the next one. I believe it will take place here in a few weeks: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/comment/553774#Comment_553774

She still needs to set the date.

  • And Geoffrey Davis got called out too.

I have to admit - as I read this synopsis above and the way they put it together I laughed out loud - it all the sudden seemed so absurd to me - like a tragicomedy after school special.....are outsiders who are reading this stuff just shaking their heads and laughing?

    Curbed's coverage - including Pearl's video (my 5th sighting):

The coverage of the event should cause even more of a circus in October.

...nothing draws a crowd like a crowd.

We should probably start making bets on things like:

    Will there be arrests?

    Will people wear halloween masks?

Will people who thought sleeping in a park was a good way to crush capitalism (ie Occupy Wall Street) try to join the cause?

Will people compare it to Ferguson, MO?

Prior to being over run, resistors of the East Village and the LES popularized the phrase "Die Yuppie Scum". Will those who resist the gentrifcation of PLG leave us with a similarly great phrase on the facades of new residential buildings?
  • I wished someone from Gothamist was there too.
  • I suspect they will be there in October.

Along with the NYT, the New Amsterdam News, etc.

  • I am DYING laughing on the streets of Manhattan as I'm reading this walking to the subway. What I find particularly hilarious is the photo of Alicia has made it's way into all this coverage. It's the one where she has worked herself into such a frenzy everything is in complete focus EXCEPT her because she had gone bonkers. Even a camera with a shutter speed of 1/250 could freeze her she had spun so much out of control......LOLOLOL
  • She's just a blur of a person in the photo
  • There is a possibility October could result in videos that are World Star Hip Hop worthy.
  • Well I see from the MTOPP website they have a meeting schedule for 9/30 described as follows:

    - Tuesday, Our next Strategic Moves! Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at 89 Sterling Street.

Topic: Creating strategies for getting our local politicians in line! -

It will be interesting to see what they come up with for the next CB9 meeting - I'm certain it will NOT be productive but WILL be entertaining.
  • They will believe it was productive, just like those who took a stand in Tompkins Sq park did, so many years ago.
  • I suspect they will be there in October.

Along with the NYT, the New Amsterdam News, etc.

Yawn. I would expect as much from the NYT. Gothamist should have been all over this last meeting, but their Brooklyn coverage tends to focus on Willaimsburg, East Williamsburg, Bushwick, maybe Park Slope and BoCoCa. Crown Heights is barely on its radar.

What's next for MTOPP, a March on Borough Hall? That could be interesting to see.

  • I find it bizarre that there would be overlap between supporters of PPEN and MTOPP.

It was members of PPEN who asked for the zoning study in the first place, primarily to avoid future developments like 626 Flatbush that are currently permitted as-of-right. They want contextual zoning, not "up-zoning". Rescinding the zoning study request is a blow to PPEN.

MTOPP wants no zoning study and no changes.

The two groups were on opposite sides of that vote. How can people support both positions on the zoning study? I don't get it.

    Based on my limited observations:

In the Spring, the PPEN folks seemed to have some wide support as a result of arguing the zoning changes were necessary to prevent gentrification "contagion" from the coming as of right high rises. They were the only entity that seemed to be doing anything about gentrification in the area.

Then, MTOPP took some of their members with their "development of Empire will result in gentrification more than high rises" pitch.

When PPEN lost their suit against 626 Flatbush, they were no longer able to offer the angry types a building to protest in front of. (They now have only an ultra boring legal appeal case).

Likewise, in the past, some PPEN folks seemed to get along with the MTOPP members because they had a common enemy: Developers of market rate (aka "luxury") housing.

Now, MTOPP seems to want to be enemies with almost everyone, and PPEN is left trying defend why "they" requested the study, to an audience that is angry and scared of being priced out, and seems to explain life in terms of race (including those who sell out their race).

    Yada, yada.

From what I understand, PPEN members were only able to make the request because they joined with moderate CB members who knew that the coming high rises near the Parkside Q are not going to be stopped, but believed they might be able to at least get them to include some affordable units as a result of FAR incentives and the like.

During the Spring of 2014, this fragile coalition held the majority of the positions within CB9.

For various reasons, the board was then radically changed.

Now, even though the board has new members, none seem as fearful and angry about the study request as MTOPP.   When one thinks about it, the consequences of having to see high buildings and not getting affordable "middle class" housing are not as serious as the very real fears of NYC's low income residents:   They are rapidly being priced out of the area and even the city as a whole.

    Random other thoughts:
    A.   As discussed above, it isn't clear the vote at the last mtg rescinds the study request, and -if it does not- I suspect those in favor of the study will skip the next mtg, so the quorum isn't reached.

...which may cause all kinds of accusations.

    B.   There is also the aspect of the new board being punished for the prior board rudely shutting out dissenters.   The perceived rudeness came not just from the District Manager.....

Is this your impression as well?
