Saturday October 11th: Dozens of teenagers play a dangerous game in Crown Heights

Here's video and commentary from a website that serves the Lubavitch community:

NYPD-
You need to convince the neighborhood patrol, Shomrim, that you will handle such situations so they do not try to do more than calling you and observing.

Comments

  • I am glad that it wasn't worse.  This could have easily escalated to bodily harm.  I am also glad this was caught on video; otherwise, no one would believe it.

This shouldn't happen and has to be nipped in the bud quickly.

The leader of the youth seems to retreat from the store after being threatened with what appears to be a mop handle.

I am glad the store keeper quickly grabbed a mop handle, and that the leader of the youth choose not to fight him.

I am also glad the store keeper grabbed a mop handle as opposed to something more lethal; shotguns remain common behind the counter in some stores.

....in some areas of the country more than others.

  • This is not a "game" as the headline states.  It's criminal.  The game they're playing is akin to Russian Roulette.  They're taking a chance, if they keep it up, they'll hit a store where above-mentioned shotgun is loaded and firing.  And the law will be on the owners life if he feels his life was in danger (a dozen wild kids running into your place wrecking it may be sufficient grounds)

    @goldemi1 -
New York City is a place where a storekeeper who branished a shotgun (or fired it at a group of kids) would risk serious legal and social consequences.

On some level, I suspect the kids know this.

The storekeeper states to crownheights.info that his store has been targeted before, and the youth seemingly faced no consequences.

As a result, the kids believe this is a game. The status of youth leading the others increases with each incident.

In response to the media coverage, hopefully the block has a few police officers standing on it at least through Halloween.

The youth should be sent the message that the storekeepers have the support of the larger community.
  • Some of the comments in the crownheights.info website are scary!

That being said teenage flashmobs are scary too!

The broadcast media has reportedly been requesting interviews with the storekeepers for much of the day.

Ch11 will reportedly air the video at 10:

It would not surprise me if Ch5, Ch7, Ch4, Daily News, The Post, etc also cover it.

In some scenarios, hate groups now show up to "protect" the storekeepers without being asked to do so.

Agreed.  To put it into context, most of these people who comment have decades of memories (either personally or by hearing stories from their parents), and when something like this happens, all that anger raises to the surface, again.  Additionally, I'd venture to say that a majority of Jewish residents in the CH area were victims, at one time or another, of violence or personally affected by violence (e.g., a family member of a victim).

This is no excuse, however, to perpetuate something that is wrong.

  • Gothamist jumped on the coverage bandwagon too today. Late.
  • Looking at the video, it looks like an organized raid of a mob of aimless kids.
Most likely one or two that have rallied the mob and the rest joined in as they went along.
They definitely were not determined. A mob of idle minded that are misguided by rebel rousers.
This is a perfect example of how this could have gone left real quick. A lucky hit with the broom handle on a wild swing into the crowd and a kid is dead. Then it becomes a racial incident and all the idiots act crazy.
This is a crime where the few that instigated it need to be found an punished, but not in a way that ends them in jail or criminally marked for life. The rest need to be educated on how and why these things are not good. Then they need to be given incentives and opportunity to do something with this idle time.
The idle mind is the playground of the devil.
  • VERY well said Mantic.

As a firearm owner myself, I am horrified by the number of people saying the shop owner should be armed.   He'll shoot a kid over knocking over stuff in his store?  An act of violence like that will almost guarantee another in return.  A firearm should never be drawn on someone unless there is a direct, immediate threat to your life.

    I agree.

And, for the sake of discussion, provide this piece.

It is written by a person who is for the right to own firearms, but has put some thought into when and how they may be legally used:

Note, I do not vouch for the article's accuracy. I just found its insight and caution to be more thoughtful than many of the comments I am reading on other sites....
