The scanner sites are not reporting it, which hopefully means that this was a shooting incident in which no one was shot.

Initial reports are of 5 - 8 shots, with the wall of the deli on the opposite corner being hit.

"A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized Saturday after he was shot on a Brooklyn street, authorities said.

The teen was walking past a deli on Classon Ave. near Prospect Place when he was hit in the ankle at 8:47 p.m., cops said.

The victim told police that more than a dozen teens on bikes were passing nearby when he heard several shots and felt something hit his leg.

Paramedics rushed him to Kings County Hospital with a minor injury.

The gunman remained at large Saturday night."

We just heard more shots a few blocks south of that area at 10:47.
  • NY Daily News vilifying bicyclists as usual. In this case, a headline calculated to stir up fear of "gun-toting bicyclists."

I was not at the scene, but something tells me that the "more than a dozen teens on bikes" referred to in the article were riding *dirt bikes* not bicycles. Big difference.

    Can anybody confirm this?
  • Its not bikes we need to fear, its those punk a** kids!
  • I'd be curious to know, but I took it as being kids on bicycles.  The victim was 13, so it could go either way.

I don't think it's fear-mongering by the Daily News.. seems more just taking advantage of an odd situation, considering that no one thinks of drive-by (pedal-by?) shootings being conducted on bicycle..
  • I don't believe that even the dumbest person around confuses pre-teen kids on bikes with adult cyclists cruising on road and Xcross bikes in their Spandex. How does anyone even know that it was the kids who shot the young man? Sounds like a stray bullet. Maybe someone was shooting at the kids/bikers because they were hassling someone. Then again, what do I know?

Where would the spandex crowd even hide a gun?
  • There was a police car posted on the corner when I walked by today. I don't really understand why because the investigation at the scene was clearly over and I find it unlikely that anyone involved would return to the scene anytime soon.
  • You never know, Mas -- most criminals are not exactly Rhodes scholars. Most are just stupid POS.

I hate the local tabloids' intense anti-bike nuttiness as much as anyone, but I don't think this is a good example of it. It sounds like the headline is an accurate characterization of what happened.
  • I hope the biker kids were dumb enough to not wear gloves as they loaded the clip, and that their fingerprints are already on file.
  • Weren't there 2 shootings not 1?  The first at Prospect the second at St Johns and Classon?  I know the cops came into Classon Social Club and took everyone's names and numbers about a supposed shooting right outside there.  They also warned the patrons of a gang war going on between 2 gangs of 12-15yo kids.  And to be alert on the streets around there.
  • Yes...there were definitely two separate shootings on Saturday evening, 10/25.  The first one at Classon & Prospect around 840pm, and the second at 1047pm at Classon & either Lincoln or St. Johns (..was hard to tell exactly where from..).  I very clearly heard the 10:47pm set of 5 shots, but when I looked outside I was unable to see anything from my vantage point.
  • So we have these two shootings, the attack on the girl on Franklin, the vandalism of the Crown Heights deli, all in a week's span.  Is this unusual for this border area of Crown / Prospect Heights or a sort of crime blip?  I can say for sure St Johns and Washington is a drug corner.
  • I would hope that this recent rash of crime would spur the Precinct to put more beat cops on the streets.

I suspect that the Troy Ave butcher shop incident and the Franklin Ave mugging would not have received any real media attention had they not been captured on video.

I don't perceive these incidents as being uncommon. The police are aware of their frequency.

If a tree falls in a forest, and no one hears it, did it really make sound?

If a crime happens, and only the police hear it, is the public blissfully unaware?

...are the police continually under resourced?

...can the police do much in these situations BEFORE the crime occurs?

Refer to the "rare" discussion ;)

A lot of the "barely paid" media sources use Brooklynian as a quick, easy resource for stories on Crown Heights.

They follow up on my/our stories by putting in a few phone calls and/or asking me for my sources.

Because I feel for their situations, and feel my sources are quite good, I help them out whenever I can.

If I increase my coverage of CH crime, they will likely run more CH crime stories, which may cause some to perceive a crime wave.

Spider-Man states, "with great power comes great responsibility".

Whynot states, "with a little time, comes an understanding of how easily people can be influenced".

For the heck of it, imagine me and Brooklynian as all powerful:
Should we try to help the police get resources by covering every crime?

Or, should we help the police have -um- "less to do" by telling prospective residents that is a neighborhood they should pay a premium for, by covering only the openings of coffee shops and restaurants?
  • Are you saying that the police only get more resources based on your reporting of crimes here?  Because they are pressured by the resulting publicity rather than the crimes themselves?  Don't get me wrong, that would make complete sense to me.

Personally I think posting the facts about a serious crime is more important than protecting a nabe's reputation.  I just want to know what's going on.
  • I try not to use the word "only".

Returning to the issue of "violence among area youth", I find this news to be interesting, even though it may be merely coincidental to this shooting:

"I am hosting an Emergency Town Hall Meeting Wed. Nov. 19, 2014 at P.S 20, located 225 Adelphi St (b/t Dekalb Ave & Willoughby). The children who attend the local schools, in the area of Ft Greene/Clinton Hill are fighting after school causing business owners to break up massive brawls. They begin arguing on FB then conclude by fighting after school. I will be joined by the Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, School Principles, Teachers, Students and the Community. Children must behave themselves, respect adults, our community & each other! 6:30PM-8:00PM."
