Weird voter letter - anyone else receive? — Brooklynian

Weird voter letter - anyone else receive?

I received this "charming" piece of mail yesterday. It was attributed to the New York State Democratic Committee, and not in support of any particular candidate. I have attempted to call the NYS Democratic Committee but no one seems to answer the phone there. Has anyone else in our neighborhood received this borderline-threatening mail?

  • My husband, who votes at every election, got one too.  He also got a weird "voter report card" commenting that he was an "excellent voter" but that our neighbors weren't.  Shame seems a weird way to get people to vote.

It is also a weird use of resources.

As I understand it, the Democrats are in danger of losing the NYS Assembly (either the house or senate, I forget), but there are no close races involving Democrats in Brooklyn.

In Brooklyn, we tend to pick our representatives at the Primary Election. If a republican bothers to run, s/he gets a tiny % of the vote.

So, "get out the vote activist", if you are going to swipe voter addresses and then

...mail out a form letter that bears no letterhead, no signature, and a non-working number under the sincere belief that it will cause people to vote Democratic....

you might want to focus your energies elsewhere.
  • Weird weird and because Halloween is tomorrow, let's say it's spooky too.

(I once tried to shed my party affiliation by filing the appropriate paperwork and guess what? That paperwork got "lost.")
  • Creepy. Is it a scam?
  • I can't confirm it, since the number Google found me for the NYS Democratic Committee has no human being answering it. I did report it via their website and also reported it to Project Vote, but have not heard back from either place (wondering if their sites ate my messages because I was typing on my phone).
  • I saw a story on this letter on Ch 5 news, it seems it was some group in the democratic committee and it also went out in areas of manhattan.

“This flyer is part of the nationwide Democratic response to traditional Republican voter suppression efforts — because Democrats believe our democracy works better when more people vote, not less,” said NYS Democratic Committee spokesman Peter Kauffmann.

This seems like a desperate attempt to spin a poorly executed bulk mailing into an opportunity to bash their opposition.
  • My neighbor says she got a misdelivered "voter report card" for me. Can't wait to see it.
  • I got this letter too!  I was completely creeped out by it.  They butter you up by saying you're an excellent voter, but the tone turns downright menacing by the end.  It made me think....hmmm, I really don't want to vote for Cuomo.  I certainly don't want to vote the other side, either, but this letter had the unintended effect of emboldening me to NOT to vote for the governor, although I'll otherwise vote.
  • There's a lot of behavioral psychology research that shows that if you think most people do X, you are more likely to do X yourself. So versions of this technique are used to do things like encourage people to conserve energy and go to the polls.

This reads to me like a very hamhanded effort by someone who'd heard of this research but didn't really understand it.
  • I did not see this.  Possible reasons include:

    1. My address wasn't included in that mailing list.
    2. My address WAS included in the list, and it was misdelivered
    3. My address WAS included in the list, and my USPS delivery person couldn't be bothered to deliver it for another two weeks (I received some primary related voting materials in early October.)
    4. My address WAS included in the list, I received the card, but my threshold for junk mail is so low that threw it in the recycle bin before really looking at it.
  • My husband got one.  I did not.  We are registered the same and vote with the same frequency.
  • Probably a GOP plant. Doesn't matter, I'm voting for Hawkins anyway.
  • Vote or Don Vido will bust yo kneecaps

  • was anyone else accosted by an older woman trying to shove WFP pamphlets in your face on the corner of bergen/underhill? i thought electioneering wasn't allowed
  • Nope, because I did not vote today. Bring it, Dems. Come ask me why I didn't.
  • The Prospect Heights Democrats for Reform report the preliminary results for governor from PS9:

    Dem: 1020
    WF: 482
    GOP/Conservative: 78
    Green: 379
    Women's Equality: 40

Nope.  There was one guy holding pamphlets in his outstretched hand.  It seemed very easy to smile and pass him by.
