Kings Theater updates and photos:Job news:he hopes to try and combat some of those issues through hiring locals for the roughly 20 permanent positions at the Kings, as well as for event-specific jobs. He sees such jobs as helping retirees or low-wage workers to make ends meet, and is looking for ”people who will help patrons make a personal connection to the theater.” He mentions several times during the tour that he’s insistent on hiring union laborers, and is all for Kings employees unionizing.

The Loews' Kings Theater $93.9 million restoration nearly complete
The
restoration — which returns the 1929 auditorium to mint condition —
started with the removal of asbestos, in January 2013. Plasterers and
painters then examined approximately 200 paint chips to figure out how
to precisely replicate the old colors.

They have had to push back their opening date from January 2015, just a little bit.
Grand Opening is Feb 3, 2015 with an Inaugural Concert by Diana Ross.
"The Theatre's 2015 programming will feature a wide range of performances by major international, national, and local talents across a range of disciplines, reflective of the diverse Brooklyn community. As part of its Grand Opening Celebration, the Kings Theatre will welcome the community with free events including open houses and theatre tours-providing the opportunity for New Yorkers to view the meticulous renovation and restoration up close. An exciting line-up of performances and community events will be announced in the coming weeks."

"The Kings Theatre (1027 Flatbush Avenue), which is about to reopen following a massive $94 million renovation project, will host a free community performance next Tuesday, January 27, at 8pm to allow neighbors see the beautifully restored site, as well as watch performances by the Brooklyn Ballet, Brooklyn Youth Chorus, TriBeCaStan, and Casym Steel Orchestra.
The event is free and open to the public – but you must get a ticket in order to attend. To request a ticket, send an email with your first and last name to [email protected]
Neighbors who send an email will, as long as supplies last, receive a voucher for two tickets. However, the voucher itself, unfortunately, doesn’t guarantee you access to the event – you’ll have to bring your voucher to the theatre and wait in line. Admission will be based on a first-come, first-served basis."

KINGS THEATRE PREVIEW PERFORMANCE POSTPONED
Due to the inclement weather, please be advised that the Preview Performance scheduled to take place at the Kings Theatre on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 has been postponed. The event has been postponed following the National Weather Service issuing a Blizzard Warning for the Greater New York Metropolitan Area from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening.
The Kings Theatre is working to reschedule the Preview Event in the coming weeks. Voucher recipients will be notified regarding the event schedule once confirmed; vouchers and reserved tickets will be honored for the rescheduled date. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Stay tuned to KingsTheatre.com for information about the Preview Event and other exciting announcements at the Kings.

We went right at 11:30 and entered at noon. Not crowded, great people, BEAUTIFUL space. Lovely time for sure.
Two things I learned from asking questions:
1- the empty lot next door will be a courtyard. They're looking to get a liquor license for said courtyard.
2- beers are cans only now. Six Point and Blue Point are the two decent options. Taps are coming but aren't in yet. It's all macro crap except Six Point. I guess Brooklyn is BAM only? Wonder if Six Point will make a Kings Theater beer... BAMboozle is Brooklyn's BAM beer. I'd love a site-specific beer here too. -
I learned that the government of NYC actually owns the place, and then contracts its operation out.The city obtained it in 80s, when it fell into arrears on its taxes. It then obtained funds from everywhere to restore it.We went around 12:30, walked right in and then followed the crowd as it slowly toured the space.This place will totally compete with BAM in terms of the types of acts it hosts.

i was in the line before noon as well! it's beautiful and enormous. i stupidly didn't think to ask any of those questions--i had been wondering what would become of that empty lot. a courtyard would be amazing, really.i mean, i hope this place gives BAM a run for its money. the very same day i went to BAM to see a packed showing of The Thing as part of their John Carpenter month. I'm sure there's plenty of programming appropriate for one or the other venue--after all, BAM has such a broader variety of spaces in which to host programming.the only thing i heard one of the employees mention was that they were in talks over hosting a production of West Side Story. which would honestly be awesome

no kim deal, though!i bought tickets for Bjork. i was on the website when the tickets went on sale and was just about to grab 2 great seats for $60 each when the whole floor map greyed out

so i ended up buying them at $100 a pop on stubhub. maybe i'm ridiculous, but i want to see Bjork of all people play in Flatbush, an 8 minute walk from my house! -

I know. :-(Still... Frank Black + Kings Theatre. Not bad.I'm not the biggest fan, but I got Sufjan tickets too. Having this place nearby, with the bands they are getting right out of the gate, is so great. -
They seem to be able to attract (or are willing to book) bands that BAM was not.
Bigger venue?
Bigger share of ticket sales to band?
Less uptight management?

I'm sure the fact it's bigger than BAM is a real draw. Bjork could easily play a stadium, and she has before--i'm sure 3000 seats in a beautiful theater has its appeals for a lot of reasons. Whereas 3000 seats sounds like the ideal show size for the pixies--I know they played the Boston Opera House a few years back, which fun fact was also renovated by the same group who renovated Kings.i wonder if it's financially a better move for the artists as well? I'd be curious to find out about that one day. These days with internet ticket sales, you don't have to worry about whether the crowds will come to far-flung reaches to see you. fans will make the trek; even if flatbush is a place they've never heard of. I'd like to see Mr. Q eat his hat :P he's always been nay-saying the Kings as a place that could never host big-time contemporary acts
