Liquor store incident, shomrim in general....
Based on the article, it appears two people were involved in shoplifting the liquor but only one was ultimately arrested.

Such incidents are why many liquor stores keep their wares behind plexiglass.
I realize that the storekeeper was exicted in the heat of the moment, but I don't think I would have chased the shoplifter close enough that he could have assaulted me.

Having trouble opening the crownheights.info link - which liquor store was it?

Empire Liquor, located at Empire and Brooklyn
"At around noon on Friday, two men entered Responsible Liquor on Empire Boulevard; the owner noticed that their behavior was suspicious and furtive, so he kept a close eye on them. Sure enough, one of them slipped a bottle of expensive tequila under his coat and they both ran out of the store.
The storeowner chased them down Empire Blvd. and up Kingston Ave. until the corner of Montgomery Street, when the thief – a tall and well-built young man – turned around and assaulted the storeowner – lifting him off his feet and body-slamming him onto the pavement.
The commotion caught the attention of a Shomrim volunteer on Kingston Ave., who called for backup and gave chase to the perpetrator. A call was immediately put in to 911 as per Shomrim protocol.
The volunteers chased the thief until they managed to corner him on Carroll St. between Albany and Troy. At that moment, police arrived and ordered the man to surrender. The man refused to comply with police orders, and the officer was compelled to draw his firearm and warn the man of dire consequences if he continued to resist.
The man finally relented and was taken into custody. He was charged with robbery and assault.
Meanwhile, Hatzalah arrived at the scene of the assault and treated the storeowner for his injuries."

It may be worth noting that this was not a Jewish owned store or victim.
-
I am told Shomrim also responds to incidents in which the CALLER lives in its catchment and is not Jewish.
-
kudos to the shomrim then. i think they have a rep of only responding to jews, but this clearly proves they're a general response force to the community.these incidents are not limited to rougher areas. even winot on franklin has theft and though in a subtle manner, keep an eye on everyone who enters. they have theft too, be it subtle desperate yuppies or otherwise. booze is pricey and alluring.
-
Very true. Sorry to state the obvious, but alcohol tends to closely correlate with poor decision making.
Re: Shomrim being only for the jews
...Well even though they state they will respond to anyone who calls who is in need of assistance, I think it is reasonable to expect that the vast majority of those served will be jewish as a result of how its catchment area is defined.
Their facebook page isn't update regualrly and doesn't define a catchment area, but there is one.
As one might expect, it matches the area where their volunteers live.

...which makes total sense to me.

Rabidly racist comments underneath the article on CrownHeights.info as usual. I shouldn't have clicked that link.

In this recent instance, Shomrim was called by residents to aid a jewish guy who was robbed, and then (a few nights later) a young black woman who had just been shot.

Apparently they will respond to calls at Kingston and Maple, which is pretty far into PLG.

"Apparently they will respond to calls at Kingston and Maple, which is pretty far into PLG"That location is about 1/2 mile east of the boundary between PLG and Wingate
-
I no longer regard Wingate as a place, so in my mind, PLG becomes Flatbush on something like Utica.
Regardless, I am surprised Shomrim goes as far south as Kingston and Maple. -
I don't know that many people regard "Wingate" as a place, but that's CB9s name for the area E. of NY Ave. I always thought of it as East Flatbush, as did my wife, who went to Wingate HS.
-
I think of the area as nicer than East Flatbush, so I am giving it to PLG, whether "they" want it or not.
-
I see lubavitch people on Maple, Midwood and even Rutland, so it's no surprise to me that Shomrim responded to a call on Maple st.
-
That is good to know. I am down there very rarely, so it came as a surprise to me.
BTW, the police have arrested a suspect re: the recent street robberies and shootings.

An article about Brooklyn's Shomrims will run in tomorrow's NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/18/nyregion/brooklyns-private-jewish-patrols-wield-power-some-call-them-bullies.html

In this incident, a teen reportedly pulled a gun on people who just stopped him from stealing a bike.

The clarity of the video makes me suspect it won't be long until the NYPD arrests him.
Howdy, Stranger!
