OMG let's talk about cats!
Subject: OMG let's talk about cats!
My first cat was a Siamese named Sam. This cat was not one of the Kate Moss style Siamese that seem so popular today - he looked like a "regular" cat, but he was Siamese. He was fat, cross-eyed, and not particularly smart, but he did one thing well - he was a master thief. His favorite stuff to steal was kielbasa (a rare treat as it only came out when my Dad was having a poker party) and corn on the cob. Don't ask me how Sam was able to jump onto the counter, but he did it. Your back need only be turned for a moment and the next thing you would see was a wide cat ass headed for the basement with about 2 inches of corn on the cob sticking out on each side. Next day that thing would be clean, and Sam would be a little bigger. He also had a funny way of sitting...you know how a cat sits when they are cleaning their business? That was how he sat all the time, relaxing against a cabinet like a fat guy watching TV on the couch, checking things out.A couple other things: Actually, now that I've thought about it, the tip off that Sam was stealin' was the THUD as his 15 or 16 pounds (plus food) hit the floor. You'd hear that, and it was like, "OH Shit, it's ON!" But by then there was nothing you could do unless you felt like going down to the basement and trying to reclaim some unusable food.
He was also pretty vocal, but he didn't have that weird "baby" cry - it was sort a sharp yelp that was unnerving if you weren't used to it.

One of my kittens seems like she is part Siamese -- she is black but she has that little pointy head like a Siamese, and she is noisy -- she's the whiniest cat I've ever met. But a total sweetheart; she follows me around all day, cries to be picked up, sits on my lap when I'm at the computer, snuggles up to me in bed at night. I've never had a snuggly cat and I'm loving this.
Her brother looks and acts nothing like her. He's friendly enough, but he doesn't want to be held -- he'll just go squirming away. He likes to hang out with my dogs. Their mother is a psycho. She was a street cat and she must have had a hard time out there. She hates me, she hates my kids, she hates her kittens (ever since they were weaned). She hisses and growls at all of us. She likes my husband and ignores the dogs. She is fat and has dandruff.
I was just thinking last night that this is like the third generation of cats in my life. I had a cat named Simpkin when I was a kid -- he died when I was in college. Then I got a kitten named Trouble in college and he died a couple of years ago at 17. So I realized I've lived through two full cat lifespans. It made me sad. -

Can't get that image out of my head - a cat nibbling away at corn on the cob!!
We got our first cat about 7 years ago - gorgeous Russian Blue who turned out to be totally blind. Occasionally I'll buy those small tubs of soft Pounce treats and leave them on a table or counter-top out of his reach. His sense of smell must be incredible, b/c he can track the treats down anywhere (and somehow climb up and get them) then hold the tub with his paws whilst pulling the lid off with his teeth. Real cute - until he did it whilst we were out and gorged on the entire tub of treats and puked on our bed (I'm sure he could have found somewhere easier to get to).
A couple of years later we got a second cat to keep him company - unfortunately they hate each other - except when they work together to get Pounce treats. Second cat can see, so he finds the cat treats and pushes them off whatever high surface I've hidden them on, then waits for blind kitty to do the hard bit of opening the tub and then the two of them scarf down the remains.
Siamese Sam looks really cute - shame we're at maximum cat capacity...

We had this thugged out cat that my sister brought home one day and named Ziggy. Ziggy was the most loving psycho I ever knew. Year round we used to have at least one window open (due to Dad's emphysema and Mom's hot flashes) with those screens that you just slid open and put the window down on. Well Ziggy would not stay in the house. He learned how to open those screens by hooking his claws in and sliding it for dear life. He would disappear for hours and sometimes whole weekends but always returned with a present for my Mom, be it a mouse, rat, squirrel, pigeon. He always looked like he got into a brawl when he got home, scratch here, piece of ear missing. If you parked your car in front of our house Ziggy would run out and lay on top of the front of the car like a hood ornament. He kind of became the neighborhood mascot and would lay on the sidewalk sunning himself. Everyone would walk by and say Hey Ziggy and he would actually nod his head at them and if a dog walked by he would sit up, puff his tail out and make this low growl in this throat that made him sound more dog than cat.
