This explains why the Kimiya place at 708 Washington opened and closed so quickly.

On Oct 7th:
The proprietor of Omarsur LLC, d/b/a Mason and Meg, located at 708 Washington Avenue (between Prospect and St. Marks), in the space formerly occupied by Kimiya made a favorable presentation for their grocery and small plates/tapas restaurant that is seeking a Beer and Wine license.
The Application included
a. Seating for 30
b. Hours of operation: 8 AM to Midnight daily
c. There is backyard outdoor seating .
d. The Proprietor agreed to close the outdoor seating by 10 PM and cap the seating at 10 seats. The committee voted to support the application, 15 in favor, and hopes the full Board supports its recommendation.

This place is up and running and looks very inviting. They had quite a crowd buzzing when I walked by on Wednesday around 8pm. The menu offered kosher banh mi, fish tacos and latkes and they have a small fridge full of cheese for sale. The ambiance felt warm and cozy.

Owners were really nice and chatty when I went in, looked cozy, and the menu will apparently change often depending on ingredient freshness/availability during the seasons. I like the idea of often changing menus. As for kosher, it seemed that the owner is shy to make that a marketing point...the food quality and price are first and foremost according to him, kosher is a side benefit to anyone who is looking for it.
-
I noticed that they are "Kosher" in that they will be closed on Friday and Saturday.
-
They are actually kosher, not kosher in quotation marks. Kosher restaurants are always, with some minor exceptions, closed on the Sabbath.
I would expect them to also be closed for many Jewish holidays too! Plan ahead so you aren't surprised.

To my surprise, an application for a kitchen inspection seems to have been filed by another entity (Little Miss Muffin) for this site.

Does anyone know the backstory?
Does 708 Washington have 2 store fronts?
[Update: Yes, these two storefronts seem to share the same building and mailing address] -
Mason and Mug recently celebrated its first year in business and got a little coverage from News 12 Brooklyn. It seems to focus more on Hasidic woman than the restaurant though. Kinda interesting...
-
Mason & Mug is closing its doors...
-
I imagine that they wanted to locate closer to Kingston, but could not secure space for a rent they could afford.
Regardless, I was impressed by how many people sought it out as a destination. -
Would that washington space really be cheaper than a storefront on Kingston? Brooklyn real estate is weird!
-
It sounds as if the tenant will be taking over an existing lease, and there may be an undisclosed amount of key money involved.
