DO WE WANT OUR NEIGHBORHOOD TO BE LIKE THE MEATPACKING DISTRICT???????

Hey all, I just heard this WNYC from following Norman Oder's Atlantic Yards Report.  I believe that Shake Shack is probably the best new restaurant to hit the Barclay's area on Flatbush Avenue in years,  but please dear G_d, please don't tell me you want to turn this neighborhood into the Meatpacking District. Ask Stella McCartney if she wants to be on Flatbush Avenue? I doubt it. Do we want upscale businesses in Prospect Heights. Do we want a Meatpacking District area, does Miss Tess Pintchik realize that the Meatpacking are still attracts prostitutes and drug dealers? Flatbush Avenue looks worse now than ever before, too many empty storefronts and now a "head shop" selling pot paraphernalia?? I think Miss Pintchik needs to do a study of the area before she talks about turning this area into a Meatpacking District. Listen to the interview on WNYC and tell me what you think? Is this a good idea? More food on Flatbush just for the Barclay's patrons or for the neighborhood? http://www.wnyc.org/story/barclays-local-economy/

  • Forgive me but are there not already swanky restaurants in Prospect Heights?

Whether we like it or not, restaurants and other businesses tend to locate near people that have the means and preferences to consume them.

I also love that Norman Oder cited a sock puppet thread in his story: http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/44919/omg-what-has-happended-to-this-part-of-flatbush-avenue#Item_43

I'd like to sit down with Norman and his fans and calmly tell them, that we know they think the Atlantic Yards and Barclays Arena was a giant fraud perpetrated by NYS for the benefit of a few, at the expense of the common man of Prospect Heights.

For the sake of brevity, let's all agree that DDDB was right.

...however, what was "right" didn't matter then, and matters even less now.

For several years, the opponents of AY have appeared like the guy on the subway platform cursing at the boss who fired him years ago for something he didn't do.

Let's all agree he should not have been fired and that he was the victim of a great injustice, to help him move on with his life.

  • Burrito Bar is swanky?? Gino's Pizza is swanky? @whynot_31, Norman Oders Atlantic Yards report is an awesome blog and tells the inside truth, not just what you read in the Daily News, about the Barclays Center and the Forest City Ratner Empire.
  • I am glad you enjoy it.

    Don't forget The Vanderbilt.

Maybe Flatbush Ave near Barclays will even more swanky once it improves its BID.

However, I am not sure I want it to be more swanky than it is.
  • The AR article by Norman Oder specifically speaks of the general area surrounding the Barclay's Center neighborhood. Since the sound bites are quotes from Mitchel Pintchik and his daughter Tess, and since they own most of the land surrounding this area, we can assume that this is what they will turn into a "meat packing district". If anyone took the time to listen to the discussion linked above. There is a Burrito Bar, a crepe rica and over on Dean a Duncan Donuts on the corner.

Those businesses seem to be doing ok, and if there is a more profitable use for those spaces, they will evolve toward them.

If the Pintchik's believe that the area could support really nice restaurants and cocktail bars, their best bet may be to only rent their properties to people pursuing these goals.

It really isn't up to the area residents to decide what an owner can or should do with their properties.

There are laws that spell out the rights of property owners.

These laws, in conjunction with our decision whether to consume a product or service, determine whether a business exists.

As such, it really isn't as easy as whether people do or do not want a specific mix of businesses.

Remember Yummy Taco, and the UHaul place that used to be where the area is now?

...we might be moving in a swanky direction.

The City Council sees the revenue potential in the area, and doesn't want businesses to flee as a a result of the scandal:

  • This thread makes no sense what-so-ever. I don't even understand the initial post. Those neighborhoods are not even comparable...past, present, or future.

    Seems kinda troll-y.
  • I don't even understand the initial post.
Possibly due to its not having been written in what could be called English.
  • It looks like the mods deleted the post that mentioned the story by Norman.

They probably concluded that user was a puppet.
