Nanny with child on S train platform at Prospect Park tonight — Brooklynian

Nanny with child on S train platform at Prospect Park tonight

As the mother of two young children I am compelled to post this: tonight at 6:00 pm I saw a woman in her mid-late 20s with a strawberry blonde/pink bob with a young boy, about 3 years old, half Asian, with a blue hooded windbreaker in a scenario that gives me chills now just thinking about it. The entire time they were exiting the S train and standing on the platform waiting for the Manhattan-bound Q train at Prospect Place the woman did not look up from her cellphone at the boy nor stand near him, nor touch him. Not when he exited the S train on his own ahead of her, not when he walked to the edge of the platform to peer down the tracks to look for the train, not when he took one tiny step back from the edge waiting for the train to arrive. It wasn't till he boarded the Q train on his own that I saw her finally look up from her phone and put her hand on this upper back to nudge him along.

She was obviously the nanny because as a mother I know that when I am with my child on the subway platform I do not let go of his hand the entire time we are waiting for the train, not even for a moment, and I certainly am not texting with my other hand. If you think this is your child with your nanny please think twice about this woman and her ability to care for your son.

I pointed out this young boy, standing so close to the edge of the platform to an older woman sitting beside me as we waited on the S train, she had noticed as well and responded for me not to worry, that everyone else on the platform was looking out for that little boy, even if the nanny was not. If you think this might be your son (or your friend or neighbor's son) and caregiver, please take action. I'm posting this as I hope that someone would do the same for me if they saw my son with someone who did not have the ability to look out for his safety.

  • I would post on Park Slope Parents or Prospect Lefferts Group. That might get more viewers.
  • Disturbing account, but good post -- and good of YOU to post it!

I must confess, I see more and more of this kind of thing every day.

I get the concerns you say but this seems uncalled for. I know plenty of parents who don't hold their kids hand the entire time. True they look up and interact but because she didnt she must be the paid nanny and not the unpaid mother?
