Something is happening at the Chinese restaurant at Franklin and President
Shanghai Restaurant.
The photo shows it on the NW corner of Franklin and President. You are looking up the hill.
Source informs me it has recently ceased operations and will soon be listed for lease. I don't know which RE firm will get the listing.

Crown Heights is losing its bullet resistant venues.

Bullet resistant, and $10 ATM.

Actually, it is not correct that they have ceased operations...they seemed to be very much operational when I walked by today.
-
Hmmm. I wonder if my source was discussing the near future, as opposed to the recent past.
-
John's closing, WOW !
-
Yeah, they were closed for a few days around Christmas-New Year's, so we were thinking the same thing, and then they seemed to open back up recently. It'd be a shame if they moved. They've been my go to quick Chinese place downstairs for over a decade now. The entire family used to live in my building and John and I spent many nights in the basement trying to change fuses back when our old slumlord owned the building (the new management ain't much better). I remember when their kids were just babies. Hopefully it's a false alarm, though with the way the area is changing it starts to feel like it's only a matter of time before businesses like this are displaced. There are more and more spaces being cleared out south of the Parkway lately, likely in expectation of new tenants, rapidly rising rents, and the resulting shift in tenant preferences. It's an odd feeling, like the calm before the inevitable storm.

A request for an initial kitchen inspection has now been filed, making me believe that we are at (at a minimum) seeing a change in ownership.
Time will tell. -

I noticed it was still there and open when I walked by there one day within the past week or two. It's been there since I was a kid. I'm a little surprised the location hasn't been flipped yet. -

I have learned that the storefront is actually two parts, a left and a right.
Something new is reportedly coming to the closed, right portion. It is somehow related to food.
-
new, red awning. "HARDEE" food. Not a Hardee's.
-
I saw the new awning and now says American and Chinese food, listing burgers and other things...The right portion was still closed so I'm hoping there is still something else in the works.
-
What was the right half previously used for? How long has it been closed?
-
No idea, but since their awning covers that part, I'd guess it was once owned (or still is) by the Chinese place? Maybe they were larger and then downsized when demand for Chinese take out went down with neighborhood changes.

I've lived upstairs from here since 2004 and there's never been anything in that space in that time. In fact, I've never even seen it open. I've always wondered whether it was a separate space or just part of the Chinese restaurant that they use for storage. I kept meaning to ask John about it, but I never got around the asking (he no longer lives in my building, so I see him far less frequently these days). -

A search seems to indicate that there are other Chinese Takeout places called Hardee in the surrounding area. Maybe the owners of Shanghai Chinese Restaurant sold the place to the proprietors of Hardee.

Does the new awning have a picture of a Chinese chef, like this Hardee location on Mytle Ave in Fort Greene?

I keep trying to post a picture I took, but it doesn't seem to be working....Is there some secret to doing this? I tried from my phone, then I e-mailed the pic to myself and tried from my desktop, and still nothing. I click on the picture to upload it, but then when I try to post it I'm told "body is required."
-
Whatever. It looks like the same company. No picture of a chef. Just an awning and sign stating "New Hardee."
-
Brooklynian is a quirky beast.
If you like, you can email it to the email in your PM and I will attempt same. There are no guarantees I will be successful; It may like the current version of the Chinese take out place. -
Picture was too large. Not gonna work. :-( It looks to be the same proprietors. My fiancee informs me that the prices are now higher and the fare is slightly more American-friendly (Hamburgers, Chicken Tenders, Wings, Sandwiches, etc).
-
Here's your photo in a size that Brooklynian likes, 94k.
They would not have needed a new kitchen inspection if they remained with the same owners and merely changed their menu.
The prior owner likely left the scene, but the employees may remain.
-
The new awning has the aforementioned chef at the corner. Here is a night shot:

something to be said for the new awnings-- between here, Sal's, and the beauty place across from bob & betty's (Sams?)-- not every old-school biz looks to be in danger of closing.
-
Or-- sadly making a last effort to stay relevant.
The mobile shop also put up a new awning awhile ago, just to add to the list. -
According to my sources, this Chinese restaurant is now part of a mini-chain.
Hopefully it's previous owner, John, had some great years running it and received a good price for stepping aside.
This is not necessarily a good or bad thing.
Howdy, Stranger!
