Using Verizon email through Optimum in Crown Heights
Hi all-
I'm moving to Crown Heights in a few weeks, and will have Optimum internet service -- they are for now the only provider in our building -- but plan to keep our Verizon email accounts. The problem: we are staying in Crown Heights now with friends who also use Optimum, and I am unable to send or receive Verizon messages using email programs like Thunderbird. The program attempts to connect to the Verizon mail servers but just times out after a while. Does anyone else have this problem? Has anybody solved it?
thanks,
Robb M

What servers and ports are you using?
-
pop.verizon.net and port 995 and smtp.verizon.net and port 465. Verizon tech support went through my settings and verified they were correct...

I don't know if you can keep your Verizon email if you don't have Verizon as your provider just as you wouldn't be able to keep your Optimum email if you switch back to Verizon.

I think you can eventually make it work, but it's recommended for you to switch to a more mainstream service, like google mail. You will have to do that sooner or later.
-
You could set up a new gmail account to pull all your verizon mail (https://support.google.com/mail/answer/164640?hl=en) and then have your verizon mail forwarded, I suppose...

Both of those endpoints get connections established just fine from my Optimum service. There's no technical reason they shouldn't work for you:
$ telnet smtp.verizon.net 465
Trying 206.46.232.100...
Connected to smtp.verizon.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.
$ telnet pop.verizon.net 995
Trying 206.46.232.132...
Connected to pop.verizon.net.
Escape character is '^]'.
^]
telnet> quit
You need to double-check your configuration and make sure it is set up correctly. One thing you may want to try is to use a DNS server other than Optimum Online's, i.e. configure your PC to use Google's anycast DNS IP (8.8.8.8) rather than allowing it to be selected by DHCP (which will pick the Cablevision DNS server).
